Mikhail Tukhachevsky
Hello, I'm Horus from Thai Misplaced Pages. Currently the article th:มีคาอิล ตูคาเชฟสกี is being nominated to Good Article status and I'm reviewing it. It is mainly translated from English Mikhail Tukhachevsky. However, when I look into Russian version ru:Тухачевский, Михаил Николаевич, I've found it to be considerably longer than the English version.
GA criteria says the article have to "addresses the main aspects of the topic." My question, since I can't understand Russian, is that 'is the Russian article contain something that hasn't already covered in English?' Or in your opinion, what info should be added to the article before it can be nominated GA? Thanks. --Horus (talk) 18:27, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi. Yes, the Russian article looks considerably larger, its most developed sections are: the Russian Civil War, the 1920 Soviet-Polish War, his suppression of anti-Soviet rebellions and his contributions to the Soviet Army theory and practice. It also has sections on early life and WWI, his arrest and death, political repressions against his family, his posthumous rehabilitation, awards and references in culture (literature, film, etc). I don't know Thai though. Brandmeister 22:06, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- It's exactly the same as English. We tend to translate articles from English to Thai. --Horus (talk) 09:49, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- I used Google Translate on the Russian version and have found these missing info in English
- 1. Early life: village of Vrazhsky, studies at 1st Penza Gymnasium, Moscow Empress Catherine II Cadet Corps and paragraph "В начавшейся Первой мировой войне принимал участие ..."
- 2. Large portion of "Гражданская война" section
- 3. Large portion of "Советско-польская война 1920 года" section
- 4. Section "Подавление антисоветских восстаний"
- 5. Section "Работа по реформированию РККА"
- 6. Section "Противостояние в командовании РККА"
- Am I correct? --Horus (talk) 06:37, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- Just got the time to check. When it comes to English vs Russian, yes. Early years and life look roughly the same, but other sections are more detailed in the Russian version. Brandmeister 13:30, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. --Horus (talk) 14:51, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Russian translation backlog project
Can you write some of the articles on this very long list of articles needed on English Misplaced Pages? They are all from Russian Misplaced Pages and exceed notability standards. I'm currently working on Lyalya Nasukhanova, but the rest really probably aren't going to be written on English Misplaced Pages by someone else anytime soon despite being of higher-than-usual notability.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 01:47, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm currently on a on-and-off basis in Wiki, but will pick something from there within next several weeks or so. Thanks for heads-up. Brandmeister 09:00, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
Azerbaijani names
Hi, I notice you've moved a number of Azerbaijani footballers to new spellings. I'm no expert on these names, so I'm not fussed either way but you've left the page openings with the original spellings. So, for example, the article is titled Kamran Agayev but then opens "Kamran Aghayev (born..." which looks very odd. The original spellings are also used throughout the articles.
I'd also query the move of Ruslan Abyshov as all of the English language sources in the article use the original Abışov spelling, as well as a few others I've looked up. Kosack (talk) 15:40, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi. Most of names inside Category:Azerbaijani people and its subcategories stick to WP:RUROM-based spelling rather than original Azerbaijani, so I was thinking about consistency. But as far as I know we don't have a formal guideline on this. Brandmeister 16:48, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- According to WP:NCRUS, WP:NCUE should usually take priority which would mean the most common usage in English-language sources. In Abisov's case, I'm struggling to find a single English language source that uses the new spelling. Kosack (talk) 17:08, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- That's because such sources may use only Azerbaijani spelling throughout for all related names, e.g. National-football-teams.com and EU-football.info. To enforce the same consistency in Misplaced Pages biographies and move them to new spellings perhaps a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_(people) would be needed. The list of Azerbaijan international footballers, in particular, had mixed spellings where the same last names, for example, were spelled differently, depending on person, and that was odd. Brandmeister 17:28, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- But if that's what they're using then so should we. A user searching for Abisov would search for the player based on what they had seen, if Abyshov is not used anywhere else then the user wouldn't be able to find his page. Even official bodies such as UEFA and newspapers such as The Guardian use the original spelling. Using Abyshov is making it significantly harder for a neutral user to locate the page by using a title only someone versed in cross-language translation would be able to understand.
- The List of Azerbaijan international footballers uses the title each page is listed at, if there's an issue there it's with the article naming structure. Kosack (talk) 17:54, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- There could always be redirects to the name. My point was that using different spellings (like Aghayev, Agayev and Ağayev) may look confusing and weird to an average reader. But I won't object reverting to previous names. Brandmeister 18:32, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah we should really be using one name which should be the WP:COMMONNAME. Based on what I've seen, I'd agree with all of the moves apart from the Abisov one as the sources seem to follow suit with those. However, I can't find any reference to Abysov being used in it's place. Abisov, even a few Abbasov's I can see, but if the sources are using the original then we should follow suit on that one. Kosack (talk) 18:51, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi Brandmeister, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas |

Botanists' names
There are many cases of botanists with similar names, so if we don't use the name given in the source, how do we know that it's the same person? We aren't given this person's name in the Cyrillic alphabet in the source (), so it's not simply a case of choosing a transliteration. If you can't provide a source showing that the botanist is known by either the name in the source or your transliteration, the sourced name should be used. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:32, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Sources don't always Romanize the names the way we do, so a redirect to our spelling is always possible. I'm content with the current solution on Pobedimova anyway. Brandmeister 10:38, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, fine. (I once served on a BSI subcommittee on transliteration so I'm familiar with the issues.) Just to note for the future that lists of botanical or zoological authors need to show all the transliterations found in the relevant literature, not just ours. Peter coxhead (talk) 11:14, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Reverted Edits in Khojaly Massacre Article--why?
I am curious why you reverted the edits I made in the Khojaly Massacre article. It's well documented that there were numerous massacres and pogroms against ethnic Armenians by Azerbaijanis in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is not controversial. These are worth mentioning to a) provide necessary background information to what led up to Khojaly and what followed it up (i.e. the Maraga massacre) b) to present the article in a fair, balanced, and unbiased manner. I'm wondering if there was a political motivation to your reversions? If so, Misplaced Pages has a duty to be apolitical. Removing references to these massacres and the followup does not neutralize the point of view, but rather does the opposite.Preservedmoose (talk) 16:37, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

- Please accept the following advice from someone who has been around this particular block before. Prolonged one-against-many arguments are a common source of topic bans in areas covered by discretionary sanctions. At this point your best options are (a) drop it or (b) start an RfC, make one comment only in support of your preferred position (and don't make the mistake of arguing the toss with everyone who holds the opposing view) and abide by consensus. Further argufying is quite likely to end up with you sanctioned. Guy (Help!) 22:19, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
