In Transformers: The Movie, Starscream personally threw Megatron from Astrotrain on their way back to Cybertron. As he floated in space, the planet-destroyer Unicron "summoned" Megatron for a task: destroy the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. For this task, Unicron "reformatted" Megatron into Galvatron (who transformed into a mortar-style cannon). His first deed as Galvatron was to find Starscream (presiding over his own coronation as Decepticon leader) and disintegrate him with one shot from his cannon mode.
Galvatron found Ultra Magnus (the bearer of the Matrix at that point) and destroyed him, taking the Matrix from his scattered parts.
