Wikibreak
Taking a break. For those with access to #wikipedia-en-admins logs, please compare the fun and games there on Christmas Eve. Nothing but the addiction is keeping me in this place, but I expect I'll see you all in a couple of days. Please do not leave comments here. Bishonen | talk 22:29, 25 December 2006 (UTC).
On the psychology
Don't take a break because of the people there. There are some users of Misplaced Pages who take no joy in any accomplishment. Instead, they, perhaps because of their real lives, live in the certainty that someone, somewhere, is insulting them. They must hunt down those insults, must prove that they are big, must puff up, must be the center of attention. This pathology is beyond our power to cure. Remember that their chief psychological need is to pretend that "thousands" look to them every day for opinions, that they have the voice of Jimbo (and can even appoint ArbCom for him), that they have the ability to "ban" people, etc. They're generally cowards, which is why their first instinct is to create a private space that they can be in charge of. That way, they can control the doors and ensure that their own voices echo back from "many" mouths (about three, actually, but they'll swear it's hundreds, thousands, or millions, depending upon whether they're on meds at the time or not). They will never debate, never put their words where they can be examined, because such openness is frightening.
In other words, the monoculture they seek is more plague than polis, and it is their chief device to pretend to be in charge. They're not. They never have been. If they were to succeed in driving off every "idiot" and every "whiner" standing in "their" way, they'd still be compelled to complain that everyone is plotting against them. They need the persecution and are incapable of enjoying anything.
You can't let their disease have any power over your own good health, cannot succumb to contagion.
And, if anyone wants to think that I'm talking about him or her, then he, or she, or it, can explain why my words would apply. If you think I'm talking about someone else, then keep it to yourself who it is. If you think I'm just making things up, then I honor your innocence and pray you get to keep it. - Count me as one IRC dolt who'll be missing you. You've come across seeming pretty reasonable, in every conversation I've had with you. I've been considering taking a break, too -- too many people are taking and making too many things too personal, and it's getting to me more than I expected it to. Eh. I hope you feel better, and I hope you come back. You will be missed. Heaven only knows how this will render with so many images on the page, but we'll see, won't we. ;) Anyway, I guess that's all I had to say, for now. Enjoy yourself while you can.
