Matter for the foundation

You are listed as the editor-foundation liason (not sure of your title) and there's an issue for foundation attention at regarding the unauthorized use of the Misplaced Pages logo on a mirror site. Perhaps you could notify the appropriate people at the foundation regarding the issue? --Jayron32 20:22, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Where is that listed? I'm not the best person for that, so whatever you're reading should probably change. Bastique 21:44, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
this page lists you as "Volunteer coordinator" under the community section. To be fair, I have no clue what that means, but given that I knew you had a relationship with the foundation, I thought you would be able to forward the message to them. Now that I have since read the job description, yeah, I guess it isn't your job really. But I was really just looking for some way to contact the foundation quickly regarding the matter. --Jayron32 21:52, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
All the pages I have examined at www.thetradewiki.com currently display the same welcome message and no other page text. I haven't seen the site before but based on Google's cache it doesn't appear to be a Misplaced Pages mirror. The problem is the modified version of the Misplaced Pages logo. Coupled with the use of MediaWiki (which is of course legal), it can easily make readers think it's affiliated with Misplaced Pages. It also uses the GFDL-licensed File:Headbg.jpg as background image http://www.thetradewiki.com/skins/monobook/headbg.jpg like Misplaced Pages in MonoBook http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/monobook/headbg.jpg. Hi there

Was with WMF? I was in the middle of changing jobs and completely self-absorbed, it seems. Please accept my sincere thanks for the help and support you offered me here and on OTRS, you are a stand-up fellow and I salute you. Guy (Help!) 18:42, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Ah, well, the announcement went out at the end of August...thanks for the sentiment, it's been wonderful working with you. I'm still an OTRS admin so we can still have fun together! :) Cary

The Great American Wiknic

Hi there! In the past, you've expressed an interest in local meetups of Wikipedians. Well, here's your chance! On Saturday, June 25, we'll be joining Wikipedians in cities all over the country for the first annual Great American Wiknic -- the picnic that anyone can edit! We'll meet up at a park in SF -- hopefully in the sun -- all other details are still in deliberation!

If this sounds fun, please add your name to the list: Misplaced Pages:Meetup/San Francisco/Wiknic and add that page to your watchlist. (And of course, feel free to edit that page with your ideas, questions, etc.) I look forward to wiknicking with you! -Pete (talk) 00:24, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Pete, I'm going to be in South Carolina. Thanks. Bastique 00:33, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Shoot! Well, hopefully another time soon, then. Have a good trip. -Pete (talk) 01:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

OTRS as verifiable source

Bastique,

You might be able to answer this question. I swear I can remember that OTRS messages were once citable as sources - am I imagining it?

MSU Interview

Dear Bastique,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 04:26, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Sura 27: Miracle of 19 in Quranic Initialed Suras: Interlocking Suras 19, 20, 26, 27 & 28

Peace, Sir/ Madam I see that you removed the section from the article, the structure of 19 within this Sura is part of the Sura and about the structure within the Sura. May I request that if there are any concerns we can address them on the talk page of the article and I God Willing get the chance to show that whatever was put up is from a reliable source and very much relevant to the article on the page. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 15:23, 13 March 2012 (UTC))

While I do not question the authenticity of your sources, or the belief in the miracle, I do question the relevancy of the item to the topic itself. When I went to the article the first, time, I found an article not about a Sura but an article about a miracle about numbers, with little relation to the topic in question, that is, Sura 27, An-Naml, "The Ants".
Additionally, I see nothing on the Arabic Misplaced Pages article here: ar:سورة النمل about this miracle, and given that Arabic is the original language of the Quran, and that primary sources regarding the Quran are in Arabic, I fully expect this relevant information to be accepted on the Arabic Misplaced Pages first and foremost, given that more Quranic experts speak Arabic before English.
Yours very truly, Bastique 17:36, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Peace, Sura 27 referred as An-Naml begins with initials "T" and "S" an equivalent of Arabic Ta and Seen. Its a process of simple verification of counting the occurrences of "T" and "S" within this chapter, since this chapter begins with these initials it is very much necessary to show why these initials are deliberately placed at the beginning of this Sura and other chapters like these, while we do this we are explaining the meaning of these initials in mathematical terms and mathematics is an exact science and a best language to explain things, mathematics removes all doubts and leaves no room for any opinions. This structure as you may know is based on the number 19 and is consistent throughout the Quran.

I am of the impression that one need not be an expert to contribute to Misplaced Pages otherwise Misplaced Pages would not be what it is today. Its contributors like you and me keep it going I feel. I am not sure whether an expert in Arabic would make a person expert also to know and under mathematics. This is true for any other language. Knowing Quran in Arabic also does not make one expert in mathematics either. One need to know maths to understand maths. Since these initials at the beginning of the Sura 27 has mathematical explanation so be it. If mathematics is not to be used for explaining verses of the Quran on Misplaced Pages then all the subjects like Engineering, Astronomy would not find place here either.

Every contributor on the Misplaced Pages contributes based on his or her expertise or at the least the subject that impresses him or her and wishes the world to know by gathering and presenting the BEST reliable source. Would this approach of asking the article to be put up on another language site first then to appear on the English Misplaced Pages later make a genuine contributor from contributing?

I think by God’s Grace I am good enough to present this topic on Misplaced Pages and I do strive to present quality information.

Since this sura has initials that are similar to other Suras (chapters) and are interwoven with other chapters to form a structure based on 19 there is no other way to show the relevance other than showing them on the table format which is what I had done. If you are not comfortable with the tables then I can put them in the commentary format God Willing. I would therefore request you to restore the section or if there are still concerns I will try my best in all possible ways God Willing to address them. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 17:14, 15 March 2012 (UTC))

Peace, God willing, I further wish to submit for your kind consideration and comment please -- It seems an undue burden to require any discussion about Quran by English speakers to first be in Arabic. Since our discussion here is not about subtle meaning of the Arabic or linguistic/semantic Arabic scholarly work, rather the mathematical structure of Quran--which is independent of any language, we should be open to presenting this in any Misplaced Pages language whether English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, etc. Otherwise, a strict language requirement would be require for example -- discussion of Galileo's (http://en.wikipedia.org/Galileo) work to first be approved by the Italian Misplaced Pages or Wagner's work (http://en.wikipedia.org/Wagner) first to go through German wikipedia. Only then would English readers be able to learn about it. That does seem undue burden to me. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 01:52, 16 March 2012 (UTC))

Hi DukhanSmoke, it is true that you should be bold in editing Misplaced Pages, however, articles in Misplaced Pages have certain universal rules that apply to all of them, and all content that does not follow these rules can be deleted by another user. Two important rules are no original research and verifiability. I invite you to read those carefully, as your contributions to the article Bastique deleted does not conform with either. I am very familiar with the subject matter of your edits, and you have not cited any of the popular Arabic Tafseer (like Tabari, Qurtubi or Jalalayn ) nor English literature around the explanation of Quaran (like Maududi or Ahmed Raza Khan), which classifies your work as original research (or at least only verifiable through the site you linked that does not meet our trusted sources policy). --Shipmaster (talk) 04:57, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Peace Shipmaster and Bastique, Yes I am aware of the links thanks, those requirements are but logical I agree, my posting is NOT an original research and is in fact 100% verifiable, the links I had used are the reproduction of the sources that I am referring below. I do realize that I should have done this before so my apologies there, I was probably being lost in trying to make the article over verifiable for readers, while missing what Misplaced Pages required. The sources are,

1. Quran: Visual Presentation of the Miracle by Rashad Khalifa, Page 162, ISBN 0-934894-30-2, Library of Congress Card No. 82-083551. http://www.masjidtucson.org/publications/books/vp/fact37.pdf

2. Quran: The Final Testament by Rashad Khalifa Ph. D, Appendix 1, ISBN 978-1-890825-00-3, Library of Congress control number: 2007938221, http://www.masjidtucson.org/quran/appendices/appendix1verify.html

3. Reference to both these sources above with excerpts occur in "Mission to America", Chapter 6 and Appendix 2, by Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad and lane Idleman Smith, University Press of Florida, 1993, ISBN-10: 0813012163, ISBN-13: 978-0813012162, http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=23405319

I propose to remove all the links that I have included in my last post and have the article with the above references and links God Willing. Trust the above will be acceptable to you and Bastique to restore the section. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 18:15, 16 March 2012 (UTC))

I still disagree with you.
  • The subject is completely covered in Muqatta'at. If you think it is inadequate, you can add your contributions there.
  • The wording of the paragraph you pasted in the Sura article was POV, using words such as 'miracle' etc.
You may want to add a reference to the Muqatta'at article if you need to, but no more than that is needed, certainly not a complete paragraph. --Shipmaster (talk) 05:44, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Peace, may I request you to see the comments as made on the talk page of the article Sura An-Naml

http://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:An-Naml#Miracle.2F_Code.2F_Structure_of_19_in_the_interlocking_Suras_19.2C_20.2C_26.2C_27_.26_28

Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 05:07, 18 March 2012 (UTC))

Peace, Bastique & Shipmaster, may I request you to reply on my post so that we can move forward, Thank you. Peace, (DukhanSmoke (talk) 14:38, 20 March 2012 (UTC))

Peace Bastique, just one more probably the final request for your comments on the paragraph that I have shortened based on your reservation. If it is OK for you now. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 16:42, 1 April 2012 (UTC))

Peace, can I consider your no reply as no objection to the paragraph that I intend putting on the main article page of Sura 27 God Willing. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 04:42, 3 April 2012 (UTC))
No, my no reply means that I have other things that must occupy my time. Why are you in such a hurry? Bastique 05:11, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Peace, I reflected and appreciate your reply. Thanks. I patiently reminded for 8 days in March 2012 on http://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:An-Naml & http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Shipmaster before getting reply. So God Willing, will again patiently remind till Misplaced Pages replies and sincerely strive to meet further requirement if any. Peace. Thanks for time. (DukhanSmoke (talk) 02:54, 7 April 2012 (UTC))

Peace, Bastique, just checking if you had time to review the paragraph. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 12:38, 14 April 2012 (UTC))
Peace, Bastique, God Willing you will not find me doing anything that goes against Misplaced Pages's decorum and God Willing you will find me patient. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 16:43, 20 April 2012 (UTC))
Peace, I hope I have patiently waited enough for you to have a look at the suggestions I have made and there is are no further objections. Peace (DukhanSmoke (talk) 14:20, 12 August 2012 (UTC))

Hello. In a discussion at User talk:Moonriddengirl#File:Burgee of nyyc.svg, she suggested I contact you. It is my understanding that the New York Yacht Club has requested their logo be removed a number of times in the past via OTRS. At Talk:New_York_Yacht_Club#Burgee_of_nyyc.svg it says: "This burgee is copyrighted by the NYCC and no permission is given for its use here. Please do not re-add. Permission must come in writing via the OTRS system. Per OTRS Ticket#2007120410011436. - JodyB" It certainly appears that it is their Trademark, but per WP:LOGOS#Copyright-free logos it appears the copyright has expired, since item 1 says "if the logo was first published before 1923, it can be assumed to be public domain." At the NYYC website at it states "The 1845 annual meeting at Windhams Tavern produced not only the first full slate of officers and the club burgee...". It seems that would make it a Trademarked/public-domain image and under WP:Logo Copyright/Trademark#Use of copyrighted or trademarked images on Misplaced Pages it says "Trademarked images on Misplaced Pages that do not rise to the level of copyright (i.e., "public domain" trademarks), are considered "free" content for licensing purposes." Even if there is some sort of copyright still in force, for fair use rationale, how is this logo any different than File:New_York_Jets_logo.svg for example? It seems that this logo can be used, at least on en Misplaced Pages, and at least in some circumstances. Is the OTRS action by the NYYC just an overzealous attempt at Trademark enforcement? Would the image have been retained if the uploader had included the proper documentation instead of an erroneous license? What is the best way to get it restored, or would the usage rules at en Misplaced Pages be more conducive to it's inclusion here with the {{keeplocal}} template instead of at commons? Thanks. Mojoworker (talk) 23:46, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

  • If the logo was created in 1845 it couldn't possibly be under copyright and therefore it is free to use. It seems someone is confusing trademark enforcement with copyright infringement. In any case, it should be perfectly eligible to be on Commons. Bastique 01:16, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
    • It looks like the trademark holder (New York Yacht Club) has confirmed the copyright date themselves: Moonriddengirl says that in OTRS Ticket # 2007120410011436 "the correspondent in the second letter, oddly, agrees with your 1844 date but still seems to think its under copyright". It looks like you deleted it in response to that OTRS Ticket # 2007120410011436 on 4 December 2007: http://commons.wikimedia.org/search/?title=File:Burgee_of_nyyc.svg. Can it be restored, or do I need to upload it anew? In either case, I can add the relevant detail from the discussion above about the copyright status, along with the {{PD-1923}} and {{trademarked}} templates so that the status will be more clear. Thanks. Mojoworker (talk) 05:24, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I handled a lot of tickets in 2007, and at the time I worked for the Wikimedia Foundation, so I'm not certain of the particular circumstances of that ticket. I can only provide my personal opinion here, that I stated above, not any informed recommendation. I don't see any harm in reuploading it, though. Bastique 14:44, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your input. Do you think it would be better to upload a new version than to get it restored (perhaps that's not possible as it was deleted in 2007)? It shouldn't be too much of a problem to find an image since the copyright has expired, however I've looked around and I haven't found an SVG version. I suppose I could convert a jpg into an svg, but I've never done that before... Thoughts? Thanks again. Mojoworker (talk) 22:12, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I would recommend opening a request for undeletion. As I didn't directly answer the ticket, I only responded to a request by the OTRS agent. Maybe we can get some clarity on the copyright status from the community. Bastique 22:17, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
OK. I've filed the undeletion request. Thanks for your advice. Mojoworker (talk) 02:24, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:WP help pages (welcome)

A tag has been placed on Template:WP help pages (welcome) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it must be substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. the wub "?!" 14:16, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Croaghpatrick.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Croaghpatrick.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi folks,

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Bastique. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to the Bay Area WikiSalon series, Wednesday, September 28

Please join us in downtown San Francisco!
A Misplaced Pages panel discussion about journalism

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Misplaced Pages through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.

Official logo of Wiki Loves Monuments

Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.

Please join us in downtown San Francisco!
A Misplaced Pages panel discussion about journalism

Hi folks,

Please copy and share this on other talk pages. We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Misplaced Pages and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather at the Wikimedia Foundation lounge to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no meaty agenda this month, but we will allow a brief period for:

  • Open mic for anybody who attended WikiConference North America 2016 in San Diego last week and wants to share their takeaway
  • Question & answer
  • Open mic for announcements
  • Maybe a focus on some topical election article editing with Ben?

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, a stool or counter and do your own thing.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on future speakers or wiki-related activities.

For further details, please see: Misplaced Pages:Bay Area WikiSalon, October 2016.

PS: Mark your calendars ahead now for the 3rd Wednesday in November, the 30th (the week after Thanksgiving), at 6 p.m. when our WikiSalon will host a super awesome top secret mystery guest mingling in our midst. We will announce specifics at the upcoming WikiSalon.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Bastique.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Bastique. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.

Proposed deletion of File:Bastique-softball.jpeg

The file File:Bastique-softball.jpeg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

orphaned file, no foreseeable use

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Misplaced Pages administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Moot

Hello.
I have a conflict with Nick a.k.a. Heligoland{{A}} a.k.a. NotASpy related to IRC, specifically #wikimedia-commons. Because the channel’s owner is not the Commons community, I have no on-wiki channel of appeal whereas the question is too localized to present it to the Group Contacts on IRC. Would you like to look at the case someday? I can of course send you the relevant channel log if warranted. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:52, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Bastique. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:52, 4 May 2019 (UTC) Template:Z152

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC) Template:Z83

June 2020

It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages for a biased choice of users to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote—in order to influence Antifa (United States). While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Misplaced Pages's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. Thank you. Recruiting like-minded editors from Facebook to participate removing the "militant" term is not acceptable. Pudeo (talk) 11:42, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Good thing I did none of those things, Pudeo. I broadcast a message for all of my Wikipedian friends on Facebook, who come in all shapes and political affiliations. There are at least 250 people I'm associated with from Misplaced Pages from all nations. I didn't specify what I thought should be fixed, only that the article need to be fixed. So not actually Canvasing, despite what you may read in the sketchy side of the news. Bastique 12:44, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Nomination of Colorado Book Awards for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Colorado Book Awards is suitable for inclusion in Misplaced Pages according to Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

IRC channel access

Hello Bastique, because you're listed here as a Commons IRC channel founder, I'm reaching out to you regarding my access problem. Although I am a Commons admin (verify), I have been unable to join #wikimedia-commons-admin.

I get this error message: "Cannot join channel (+b) - you are banned" (!) I don't have this problem with any other freenode IRC channels, including access to these restricted channels:

  • #wikimedia-otrs-en
  • #wikipedia-en-admins
  • #wikipedia-en-revdel

Can you help with this, please?  JGHowes  01:22, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

@JGHowes: Please go to #wikimedia-ops and ask for operator assistance. That way they can verify that the IRC user claiming to be you is indeed you. You should also make sure you have a cloak as invite exceptions would be grated based on that.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:45, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
@JGHowes: Did this work? I'm not immediately available on my talk page but if I'm around I can help do what you need. Bastique 23:42, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Bastique. It's all straightened out and I now have access to #wikimedia-commons-admin. At the time, I did not have a cloak and, by using Kiwi IRC web browser, was denied access to #wikimedia-commons-admin. Curiously, even without a cloak I was able to access the other restricted channels mentioned above. Anyway, I now have a cloak, so access is OK.  JGHowes  23:58, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
