Vanes said, “I signed with Shelly the day before the fight when Bernard Hopkins beat Howard Eastman in Los Angeles. I’ve been training with Freddie ever since I got back from the Olympics. I’m just excited, I can’t wait to get in there.” Regarding his nickname, Vanes said, “When I was coming up to the Olympics, that’s what everybody was calling me, ‘Nightmare.’ When I was fighting in the Western Trials, I just started beating all the guys that were ranked. Nobody knew me, so I was like an underdog coming in and beating everybody. So they started calling me Nightmare every time I stepped into the ring.”
