The word is derived from the Hindustani word saraf (bullion merchant), alternately, Sunar or Swarnkar is a Hindu caste in India referring to the community of people who work as goldsmiths. The community is primarily Hindu and they are Kshatriya and Brahman by origin, and found usually in Northern India which in turn, is ultimately derived from the Arabic ''ṣarrāf''. The word is also used in East Asia which mean a cashier, especially in a parking lot or payement car park or identity card, car licensing offices and public service agents, and a money lender or zamindar, and a money changer or banker in South Asia.
