Bob Israel

The Bob Israel referenced here is not one of the Robert/Bob Israel subjects currently on the disambiguation page, which I have been largely curating. It appears that this particular Bob Israel is a jazz musician (part of a group called "Total Eclipse") in the Washington DC area who also has a tiny record label (First American) and is an event coordinator. I am not sure that he would merit a Misplaced Pages biography according to our notability standards. What do you think? I'd be happy to create his biography, if it's seen as important to include in the encyclopedia. - AppleBsTime (talk) 12:54, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

@AppleBsTime: Good research! If you think he's wikinotable, go ahead and write the article (but I suspect you think he isn't). If you've got some citations, post them here if you like, and I'll give you my opinion.

If you don't think he's notable, the most helpful thing for our readers may be to remove the link, and to add an {{efn}} footnote by his name. You'd need to add a Notes section (with {{notelist}}) immediately above the non-existent References section. If you've got a WP:V citation or two tying him to the album, so much the better; you wouldn't have to prove notability, just the fact.

Mind you, I doubt that the album article itself (unsourced since 2006!) would survive WP:AFD, and that might be the simpler solution... (I see you've voted recently twice at AFD, and were right each time.) Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 13:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for sharing that template and that cool AFD link with me! I keep learning more every day about nifty gadgets on Misplaced Pages. Sources for the "jazz" Bob Israel would be limited. There is an article from March 16, 1989 in The Evening Sun (Baltimore) about the "Blues Alley" nightclub, with many comments by Bob Israel, "marketing director" of Blues Alley. But the content is about Blues Alley, not about Mr. Israel. I note also that the only venue where "Bob Israel's Jazz Orchestra" and "Bob Israel's Big Band" ever seemed to land a gig was at Blues Alley. Other indications of limited reliable sources are this, this, this, and this. Nice enough guy, but "jamming with friends" is not material that builds a Misplaced Pages biography. I think I'll try an AFD on the Pamela Moore album, as it appears the original author of that page was a single-purpose editor, probably looking for a promotional boost in sales. - AppleBsTime (talk) 14:01, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

@AppleBsTime: I've looked at those citations (bar #1, which needs a subscription) and agree with the whole of your assessment - more about the club than about him, local musician, probably good for a fun evening out, but not wikinotable.

I collect handy-looking WikiGadgets.

If you're thinking of posting at WP:AFD, make sure to do a WP:BEFORE search. Two or three pages of a search should be enough. I suspect that for a never re-released album there won't be anything, but you never know; I've saved a couple of articles about Bollywood films which I was angling to delete by finding a review or two, and adding them.

After further thought, if Pamela Moore is to be considered a notable musician (and I think that is not in question), it's important enough that her first recorded album be included in Misplaced Pages. Regarding disambiguation

Hi, I have noticed that you edited Amanat's disambiguation page Amanat Ali but here is that article which you need to see and add this to the disambiguation page of Amanat's ali Draft:Amanat_Ali_(born_1987) and kindly remove born 1987 when you move the page.

Because there's more than one Amanat Ali, the title needs a disambiguator (as Robert McClenon has already pointed out). The other three are all singers as well, and the one in draft has no third element to his name; so his birth year does look the best way of doing it. It's what I'd do. Rotary joint

Re , the rotary joint in this case carries two compressed helium lines and an electrical signal, so it's partly like a slip ring and partly something that we don't seem to cover here. I'm not sure how to resolve that! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:27, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

@Mike Peel: That's what it looked like to me, though I couldn't visualise the gas line element (especially a dual one). Is it something like a Ground glass joint#Ball-and-socket joints? (I had to google for those, the hatnote on ball-and-socket joint was misleading.) Those allow some flexion, but I can envisage metal or plastics versions which would enable full rotation as well. Helium is tricky to contain, so the seal would have to be good. Or is there only partial rotation, when a pair of flexible pipes would work (twist not a problem)? If we don't have an article, an inline or {{efn}} footnoted explanation (ideally with a citation which includes a drawing) may be the most helpful thing for readers. @Mike Peel: It's only a small (though essential) bit of the whole device. How about something like "a specialised rotary seal, combining an O-ring seal for the gas connection and a slip ring for the electrical one"? I'm looking for wording which most readers can just pass over thinking "OK, got it" without being sidetracked.

(I remember an edit I made, a couple of years ago, about a video game which used an advanced computer graphics technique. I could have linked to a highly technical WP article; but decided that all the average reader would want was a brief layman's description of how those clever shadow effects were produced.) Windows on ARM

You write "Links to DAB pages are errors per WP:INTDAB" while it actually says "are typically errors". Yes, it also states "the community has adopted the procedure of rerouting all" (because of some issues, also affecting you?), but it seems this is a very good exception. Windows on ARM is not likely to mean something completely different, and I actually mean it to apply to both current uses (and all I could foresee added there, in case we get Windows 11...). I do see "The exceptions, when an intentional link to a disambiguation page is appropriate", but not sure I can follow it like "Windows on ARM (see the source here). What bad effects are for keeping as I did? It's not clear to me how to follow WP:HOWTODAB. Maybe it's a case of WP:Ignore all rules. comp.arch (talk) 17:46, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

A stalker writes: @Comp.arch: WP:HOWTODAB is about deliberately linking to a disambiguation page when referring to all or many of its entries together, e.g. The word Mercury has many meanings. However, Julia (programming language) has one specific meaning, which I think from the context is Windows 10 on AArch64. We don't have an article on that exact topic. I was deliberately linking to Windows on ARM (not at first, but later with my revert). If the context had been "Windows 10 on AArch64" (only) then yes, you're right (but there's no good single link for that). I wasn't liking saying it was explicitly supported, on the opposite, I was saying it, and any Windows on ARM wasn't supported. comp.arch (talk) 18:22, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

@Comp.arch: Is Windows on ARM a big enough topic for a {{bca}}, or for a section in some article or other? It wouldn't need to be very long, and a paragraph or two could be much more informative to readers (such as me, I still don't know what it is) than a DAB page. I was going by ref 112, which specifically mentions ARM64 and AArch64. However, I expect you're right that Windows RT on ARM32 (and plenty of other combinations) won't support Julia either. Do we even need to mention unsupported platforms at all? Certes (talk) 18:49, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

I felt it needed to mention Mac transition to Apple Silicon at the Julia article (and just mentioned Windows as a side-note), even if not explicitly supported, yet. Since it probably will be in the recent future. Also it's not only about what's explicitly supported, but what can be supported, and Windows probably can just as well (you can compile from source for ARM, I'm guessing for Windows too, and binaries provided for Linux). While Apple has such a page, it might be too soon for Microsoft, their implementation doesn't seem as good, and the (long-term) plan isn't there to ditch Intel. But I can very well see that article expanded, at least to a stub (would fix our problem) or moved to List of Microsoft Windows versions (and Windows on ARM made a redirect). To be fair, when I think about it, Windows Phone 7 (all Phone my now discontinued) only ever supported ARM, so for that it's a major implicit feature. I wouldn't make a big deal of it yet for desktop Windows, there's not even a separate Windows on Itanium or for PowerPC or Alpha chips, also once supported. comp.arch (talk) 19:14, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

@Hog Farm: Drum, Nevada County, California was listed in {{Nevada County, California}} until I just took it out. That's cleared the links-in (there were over 50). It would be worth checking to see if any other of those deleted California backlots are in templates or have other links-in.

I've WP:ROBIN swapped Drum, Placer County, California and Drum, California per WP:PRECISE. Let me know if any other of these deletions results in a redundant DAB page, and I'll be happy to do the same.

Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the River was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that this was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

@BoringHistoryGuy: I can't better that pic! There are, unfortunately, plenty of mistakes - not only in WP - to keep us all occupied for a looong time. I'm currently struggling with the biography of a minor, but notable, C18 composer; whose entry in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (the gold standard secondary WP:RS for classical music) says he was "not a society man". Misplaced Pages is not therapy

Dear Narky Blert

Thank you for that link. I had not seen that essay before. As it says, Misplaced Pages: Misplaced Pages is not therapy. That being true, therapy in the form of providing at least a modicum of purpose and meaning is in the eye of the beholder. As is equally, I suppose, disruptive behaviour. That said, I was surprised to be accused of wiki-lawyering. It seems to me that WP policies and essays are OK to rely on when explaining why some actions should not be taken, but relying on such policies and essays to explain why an action was taken is seen as wiki-lawyering. I have also been surprised that essays which are not part of WP policy and have not been vetted by the community are referred to as if they have some kind of quasi-policy status. I know of only one exception, and that is WP:BRD, which I was recently surprised to see is only an essay rather than WP policy. Even so, BRD seems to have become custom and practice.

I wanted to say this as politely as I could rather than having it floating through my head, for the next six months.

What to do when the source itself is ambiguous?

At The Discourse on the Eighth and Ninth, you added a dab-needed tag to an internal link to Diospolis. Now I'm not sure what to do. I did realise at the time I added the link that I was linking to a disambiguation page, which I did because the source used only refers to "Diospolis", without disambiguating which Diospolis is meant. From the context, it's clear that it's supposed to be a Diospolis in Egypt, but still there were two cities with that name in ancient Egypt (Diospolis Magna and Diospolis Parva).

Now someone with more knowledge than me about ancient Egypt might know which Diospolis was meant, so it would make sense to leave the dab-needed tag on the page. On the other hand, I'm not sure whether this is what the tag is normally used for, neither whether future wiki users would understand what is expected from them. Other options are to remove the wiki-link itself, or to link to the disambiguation page in the proper way (by using something like ]<!--DAB link is intentional, source is ambiguous over which Diospolis is meant--!>, as I've just learned).

What should I do in cases like this? I'm relatively new here, but given the nature of the materials which I work on, I suspect that I will be confronted with this kind of thing relatively often. Apaugasma (talk) 19:07, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

@Apaugasma: Good question! I'd already bookmarked that one for possible attention by WP:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome in case someone there knows for sure. (They're really really good. I was astonished that anyone could confidently solve this problem - Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome#A link to a DAB page.)

What I do when I've decided that it will likely forever be impossible to determine exactly which place is meant, is to add an {{efn}} footnote something like. "The source says FizBuz, but that could mean either FizBuz (north) or FizBuz (south)". No WP:OR, and it shows that an editor has had a good hard look at the problem, and readers learn that it's unsolved and possibly insoluble.

I've used that technique in particular for English birthplaces when there are two villages less than a mile or so apart, locations of air combats in WWI and WWII where even the war diaries of the units would be unlikely to help, and birthplaces of the ancestors of Jewish emigrés from e.g. Poland or Belarus where many villages have the same name and it's highly unlikely that any records have survived. It depends. If someone was born in 1200 AD in FizBuz, I will confidently assert that it was none of the places in USA with that name. If an air ace won a victory in France in 1915, I will link to the DAB page noting the unlikelihood that it took place in Brittany while linking in particular to the places where IMO (WP:OR...) military logic says it could have taken place. Dear Narky Blert and BD2412: Many thanks for the input! Thanks a lot also for alerting me to the existence of Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome (I too would have been able to answer your query about Philo and Zeno, so I will definitely add this page to my watchlist).

What I've ended up doing is what I should perhaps have done in the first place: do some extra research. It turns out that even the editor of the English Nag Hammadi translations isn't sure whether the Hermetic treatise is referring to Diospolis Magna or Diospolis Parva (and, moreover, that he wrote this in a passage which I had actually read the first time, and even cited), so it seems that it is fundamentally unclear (as these things often are). (Even a {{dn}} tag can do that; I remember once tagging a dozen articles about college football; next day, all had been cleared.)

Thanks for the ping. I agree that there's no point in running a filter which catches nothing, but let's keep it around (disabled) in case we need it or a modified version again later. The Indian film vandal is different from "irrelevant linker". I suspect that for some (probably good-faith) reason they replace the section by a list compiled by taking film names from a (probably reliable) source and mechanically adding square brackets, without understanding that not every article can have its ideal title. The original source only mentions: "the whole floor is covered with blackbutt mosaic tiles". The exact Eucalyptus type is not specified. Blackbutt parquettry is a quite common notion usually without specifically mentioning the exact wood type. Therefor the original article probably also did not mention the exact wood type. Hello, I am writing to you because you were the one speaking French in the Guy Macon's ANI topic, and because Drmies asked me not to write in the current ANI topic. I just had a look to the global contribution link XIII gives in the ANI and I ended up on a conversation name "the pedophilia conspiracy in Sciences Po" on the French Misplaced Pages : https://fr.wikipedia.org/search/?diff=180233351#Le_complot_p%C3%A9dophile_de_Sciences-Po . You can see by yourself the misrepresentation of the truth he is giving, most of the contributors do not really understand his point of view anyway. He is saying that a false pedophilia conspiracy theory is being put in the article with sources like Gala and that he wants to alert the English WP of this because it could look bad if journalists see it (one is telling him that Gala is nowhere to be found in the sources ; they tell him to write on the English help desk, but he says he tried with no outcome, not mentioning of course the current ANI, but anyway).

I noticed one point though: he is asking several times, and it is the aim of the topic, if somebody would know the personal contact information of WP English administrators ("est-ce qu'une personne fréquentant le bistro aurait un bon contact avec du coté des Administrators de la version anglaise ?" "Donc si quelqu'un a un contact d'Administrator à qui refiler le bébé, je prends." – administrator is in English "je demande... le contact...").

@Delfield: IMO Drmies gave you good advice in WP:ANI#XIIIfromTokyo, and you are right to follow it. You've made your points for everyone to read. There's no value in repeating them. I plan to stay out of that discussion from now on unless someone proposes a vote.

If XIII wants to contact an English WP admin, Talk Pages and emails are available. The other editors who posted in that French WP thread seem well aware that enwiki and frwiki are entirely separate. No-one seems to have responded to the suggestion of involving le service juridique, and I suspect a trace of le second degré in Thibaut's post.

The comment les anglo-saxons relatant les choses de façon moins édulcorées que les francophones made me chuckle. French lawyers are accustomed to sign off letters containing blood-curdling threats of legal action with Soyez assuré de mes sentiments les plus distingués.

I think XIIIfromTokyo is using over and over that common trick of politicians: to answer about a scandal about you, appear shocked and make a scandal about the question about the scandal so that the other one has to explain himself and the subject becomes the other people's question or comment. Templates are such a good idea that it's important to have as many fine distinctions as possible. See Misplaced Pages:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 February 15#Template:R from alternative hyphenation and Template:R from alternative punctuation just below it. Who cares if they're improperly or inconsistently used, or require guesswork?

It's probably too late to add siadn to that discussion, and I don't intend to try. I mentioned it for completeness (assuming there are no other disambiguation templates no-one knows about).

In my experience, discussions about disambiguation (except at WT:DAB and WT:DPL) are always attended by editors who know nothing about the subject and won't see the problem. Narky Blert (talk) 16:26, 4 March 2021 (UTC)

Don't pretend to be in favor of a discussion: you refused to discuss the subject on the talk page after I encouraged you to, and your only contribution was a source which supported my position all along. The other two who reverted me were only doing so because they thought you had a valid position to begin with; they had no personal objections of their own either. This is nothing more than pointless obstruction. You're still free to offer more arguments in support ofyour position in the talk page: but you won't do that, will you?

I expressly quoted WP:DABMENTION - "If a topic does not have an article of its own, but is mentioned within another article, then a link to that article may be included if it would provide value to the reader." There is already Claudia (disambiguation) and Claudia gens#Claudii Pulchri; any of these could be put as hatnotes on the article Claudia Pulchra. Why on earth does there need to be a Claudia Pulchra (disambiguation) when there is only one person of that name?
