Katumba launched his presidential campaign in mid 2020 as an independent candidate. He picked his nomination forms from the Electoral Commission and collected the mandatory 100 signatures from 98 districts and raised the 20 million shillings nomination fee. Kutumba campaign symbol was a table and his slogan was “Katumba Oyee” to bond with the youth. He ran his campaign on the streets walking with mega phone in hand and sometimes from open roof cars. He did not print posters or run jingles like other candidates. Katumba unveiled his campaign manifesto along with a book ‘untold Story of John Katumba’ he said would inspire the youths to support his election just a week before polls were due to open. When asked why he was launching his manifesto a week before the poll, he responded that if he unveiled his manifesto long before the election, people would forget his key agenda but launching close to election date would keep his campaign agenda of full employment for the youth fresh in the mind of electorates. Burundian politician

John Katumba (born 1996) is a Ugandan politician who ran for the office of the president of Uganda in the January 14, 2021 presidential election as an independent candidate. At 24 years old, he was the youngest presidential candidate in the 2021 election and the youngest in Ugandan presidential election history. He was one of eleven candidates in the race including president Yoweri Museveni who became Ugandan elected president in 1996 same year Katumba was born.

Early life and education

Katumba was born in Naalya –Kiwatule in Kampala to Kkonde family with ancestral home in Buikwe District in Central Uganda. His parents died when he was about two years old and was raised by a guardian. He had his primary education at Zion Hill Standard Academy in Buikwe District before enrolling in Central View High School in Mukono district for his O and A Level certificate. His guardian paid his full school fees up to A Level but stopped and started paying half of his fees when things became difficulty for the guardian. Katumba then started going to washing bays where he washed cars to raise money for his fees and other academic materials. After finishing high school, he went to Makerere University Business School where he studied Transport and Logistics Management graduating with a first degree in January 2020.
