Although many cities and times have had gangs, the gangs of the Bronx in the 1940s-1960s have become famous because of several novels and movies. The best account of Bronx gangs is Richard Price's novel The Wanderers and follow-up movie of the same name starring young Ken Wahl and Karen Allen.
Brooklyn gangs have been immortalized in A Stone for Danny Fisher by a then young Harold Robbins, The Amboy Dukes and the movie City Across the River (starring a young Anthony Tony Curtis). These works anticipated Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets by 20 years.
Gangs of the Bronx included the Fordham Baldies, the Fordham Flames, the Golden Guineas (predominantly Italian, the Villa Avenue Gang, and the Bailey Gang. The Baldies were especially well-known for two reasons:
- Rumors would sweep Bronx high schools in the 1950s and 1960s that "the Baldies were coming" to confront the student body (including the non warlike Bronx High School of Science and DeWitt Clinton High School.
- The Baldies were reputed to shave the heads (and possibly other areas) of those they caught (see Sigmund Freud for interpretation).
