Career
Information officer for Apple daily
Leung worked at Apple daily in 2008 as an information officer for several months.
Director of purchasing department for Vitasoy International
Leung joined Vitasoy International in 2016, and worked there as director of purchasing department before his death. After he died on July 1, 2021, Vitasoy said in an internal notice that Leung "unfortunately passed away", and "we extend our deepest condolences to Leung's family". This immediately triggered a strong boycott from Internet public opinion in China and criticism from China media personals. Vitasoy International stated afterwards that the notice was issued by a staff member from the personnel department without authorization, and had fired him. Some Hong Kong netizens expressed strong dissatisfaction with Vitasoy's reaction.
Death
On July 1, 2021, Leung approached from behind and stabbed a Police Tactical Unit police officer using a knife in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, then committed suicide by stabbing his own heart. Leung was immediately subdued by surrounding police, arrested and sent to hospital. He died at 23:20.
Suspected motives of Leung include dissatisfaction with Hong Kong police sheltering criminals and opposition to the implementation of the Hong Kong national security law and its ramifications on the course of democratic development in Hong Kong.
After the incident, some Hong Kong netizens called Leung as "martyr" and "the brave". There were even citizens who went to the attack site to lay flowers and bow.
