== Ethics etc. ==

Hi Essjay, I just wanted to say that I have read with concern allegations that you have previously been a little flexible with the truth about your qualifications - not something I'd give a fig about except you were kind of representing Misplaced Pages when you did it to the New Yorker. That was bad. I'd also like to ask you directly, now that your age is open - do you want to update the Fortune 20 bit and 5 years paralegal bit? Is it true? - Please be honest, I'm concerned that otherwise you may bring wikipedia in disripute. ] 03:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Replies here may be slow.
I will be attending a meeting in California this week, and while I will have internet access most of the trip, I'm not sure how frequently I'll be able to get on and respond to things. Users may find quicker response from email, but I cannot promise to respond to all of them immediately.
Things should return to normal next week.

Status & Skins

This will sound really stupid, but what should I do with this code? I created User:Greeves/statuschanger.js with the same code as User:Essjay/statuschanger.js and I am wondering what to do now. By the way, thanks for the code that you've already given me! Greeves 00:30, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Once you've put it on that page, and set up the subpages (the status page and status table pages), you'll add your status page (i.e., User:Essjay/Status for me) as a transclusion wherever you would like it to appear. You'll also need to include the statuschanger.js page into your monobook.js file, using code like this:
function inc (file) {
  var lt = String.fromCharCode(60);
  var gt = String.fromCharCode(62);
  document.writeln(lt+'script type="text/javascript" src="/search/?title='+file+'&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"'+gt+lt+'/script'+gt);
}
inc("User:Greeves/statuschanger.js");

If you have trouble with this, let me know and I'll look into your statuschanger pages and see if I can find the problem. Essjay (Talk) 03:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikimedia, Board of Trustees

Hello, Essjay, do you know when the next elections for the Wikimedia, Board of Trustees are, and who can vote for them? (I'm asking because I wanted to know if resgistered users could some how meet the requirements to vote for the people in the board as well. I recall there was an election for the Arbitration Committee that ordinary users could vote for, which I didn't have the requirements, however.)--Wikipedier 02:04, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

I certainly will understand if voting for this election is restricted from regular users, just like editing protected pages, hiding revisions, and deleting pages.--Wikipedier 02:14, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

The rules for each election are set by the Board-appointed election officials for that election; in the 2006 elections, I was one of those officials. The next scheduled election is in the summer of this year, though I'm not sure of the exact date. The standard that has been used the last two times is that any user who has been registered on at least one Wikimedia Project for at least 90 days and has 400 edits with that account on the same project at the time of the election may vote. (That is, if en.wp is your qualifying account, you would need to have registered here at least 90 days before the election starts, and have 400 edits here.)
The Board election is a matter that affects all users, so a careful balance is always considered; we want to make sure to include as many users as possible, but we also want to prevent any election fraud (i.e., using sockpuppets and the like). The Boardvote software automatically checks eligibility based on the rules set by the Election Officials, and the officials watch the voting log carefully to strike any fraudulent votes.

Thank you very much for your help. I understand that these people legally control all Wiki projects of Wikimedia, and the importance of preventing any form of abuse in this matter. I know that you arn't sure about the newest requirements yet, but if it were the same as the old ones, where I would have be registered to at least one Wikimeida project for at least 90 days and have 400 edits with that account on the same project, would being a registered user of Misplaced Pages for at least 90 days and having at least 400 edits on Misplaced Pages by election time qualify me?(I for example, have an account on the English Misplaced Pages, and have about 500 edits with the same account, on the English Misplaced Pages.)--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 04:52, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I will probably not be one of the Election Officials for the next election, so I'm not sure what the exact rules will be, but I suspect they will be very similar. Essjay (Talk) 03:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I left you a new message above your last one, where I should have written the message below.--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 04:54, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm also curious about another thing about the board. Does Jimmy Wales still retain the authority to ultimately govern' and even disolve the whole thing with the board of trustees that was set up, just like he was said that he has the authority to disolve the whole Arbitration Committee?(For example, if all the voters voted out or didn't vote for Jimbo Wales on the next board election, and all of the current board members wanted to remove him from all positions that he has on Wikimedia, such as the position he has right now of Steward and administrator, could he retain the authority to deny that removal, and decide to remove one or more of the board members as well?) I'm just asking this, because usually the founder of an organization is ultimately in charge of it. I'm also aware the founders sometimes give up some of that power, and I don't know if Jimmy Wales decided to have the ultimate authority of the Wikimedia Foundation go to it's board of trustees beyond even himself, and that's just what I'm interested in knowing. I know he still retains the authority to ban users from Misplaced Pages, as stated in the banning policy of the English Misplaced Pages.--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 23:25, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

CheckUser question

I checked a page recently that had only two edits: one was a creation by a user, the other a blanking by an anon IP. It would be nice to see if they were the same person. Since I can't find any information on becoming a Checkuser user anywhere on WP, I thought I'd ask someone who already was a Checkuser. How can I get this permission? Do I have to be an admin, bureaucrat, or sysop? I'll be watching for replies here. Thanks! — Tuvok 06:55, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Indeed, only 14 people have the permission on this wiki. It is generally limited to current and former arbitrators, and a few very carefully selected users; only two non-arbitrators have been given the tool, myself and Redux, and I am the only one to have received it before becoming a bureaucrat/oversight. The liklihood of the tool being expanded outside the Arbitration Committee is unlikely, in my opinion. Essjay (Talk) 03:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

RE: help with research

Hello Essjay,

Apologies for the delay in replying - i've been stuck in a data analysis hole!

Posting them here is probably easiest - most people who have helped have done so on their talkpages.

Many thanks

Sure thing; I'll be back home and back to normal next week, so you should see something from me on Monday or Tuesday. Essjay (Talk) 03:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Usurped

Template:Usurp originally had users being renamed to Usurped. I tried to change it, but I messed up. Now all the users will be renamed to their original name. I want them to be renamed to their original name Usurped. For example, User would be renamed to User Usurped. How do you do that?

Admins and /U

Will this require any special action (usurping an account to replace the username with an admin account; eg. Daniel.Bryant (talk) to Daniel (talk))? I'm thinking that we may need to go through all the hoo-haa with Stewards desysopping and then B'crats resysopping, but I'm not sure. If it is different for sysops, I'll add it to {{cuu}}. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 21:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
