During the Battle of Kyiv of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian ground forces entered Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine and engaged Ukrainian forces in battle.

Timeline

24 February

In the early morning of 24 February, Russian military forces began to conduct artillery and missile strikes against targets in Kyiv Oblast, including on Boryspil International Airport, which is Kyiv's primary airport.

Later in the morning, Russian forces that had previously amassed in Belarus crossed the border into Ukraine and entered Kyiv Oblast from the north. The Russians seized control of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located close to the border, after a skirmish with Ukrainian troops.

Later in the day, Russian paratroopers landed at Hostemel Airport and briefly seized control of it, after which intense fighting for control of the airport began. The Russian paratroopers were later repelled from the airport by Ukrainian troops, according to Ukrainian officials. Russian forces have also attempted landings in and around the Kyiv Reservoir.

On the night of 24 February, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that "subversive groups" were approaching Kyiv. That night, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said during a conversation with congresspeople that some Russian mechanized infantry units had advanced to within 20 miles (32 km) of Kyiv.

25 February

On the morning of 25 February, the Russian Air Force continued its bombardment of the capital city, bombing central Kyiv. Ukrainian forces later shot down a Russian plane over Kyiv; the plane crashed into a nine-story apartment complex, setting the building ablaze.

At 06:47, a Ukrainian army unit detonated a bridge over the Teteriv River near Ivankiv, halting a Russian tank column advancing from Chernobyl. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine later said that Ukrainian airborne assault soldiers have engaged the Russians in a skirmish at Ivankiv and Dymer.
