Roman Augustus Brady is a fictional character on the television drama Days of our Lives. Roman was played by Wayne Northrop from 1981-1984 and 1991-1994, and has been currently played by Josh Taylor since 1997, with a brief hiatus in early 2004, when he was a victim of the show's now-infamous serial killer storyline. Drake Hogestyn played Roman Brady from 1986-1991, until Northrop returned to the show and it was revealed that Hogestyn's character was not the true Roman Brady.
Hogestyn's portrayal of Roman was retconned into a new separate character, that of John Black (born Forrest Alamain), an amnesiac mercenary employed by Roman's arch-nemesis, international gangster Stefano DiMera, who had brainwashed John into believing he was Roman. This is a true retcon as during Hogestyn's portrayal as Roman, it was well established via flashbacks and other plot devices that he was the true Roman Brady (interestingly enough, John's past was later retconned again into his being the son of Stefano's ex-wife Daphne and an as-yet unknown father; this revelation came at roughly the same time as the retelling of an ancient feud between the DiMera and Brady families, fueling fan speculation that his father is none other than Shawn Brady, thus making John and Roman half-brothers, although this has yet to be played out onscreen). Some watchers and fans now refer in retrospect to Hogestyn's character from 1986-1991 as "Roman II", "RoJohn", or "faux Roman".
Roman is a police captain and detective in the fictional midwestern town of Salem. He is also a former agent with the fictional International Security Alliance (ISA), a spy agency focused on the unusually high-level and global criminal conspiracies that tended to center around his otherwise-quiet home town. During his portrayal by Northrop, he was established as a top-notch cop but also a bit of a renegade, often accepting deep-cover assignments, and a master of disguise. Hogestyn's character was more by-the-book on the job, although still dangerous with a dark side somewhat characteristic of an ex-spy, and more of a ladies' man. Taylor's portrayal is more that of a "regular guy", with a bit less intrigue and more straightforward professionally.
The character as portrayed by Northrop and Hogestyn was one of the main characters on the show and a leading man in Roman's various romances. However, the character as portrayed by Taylor has for the most part (with the exception of his return and his part in the Salem Serial Killer storyline) been reduced to more of a minor character.

Enemies & Rivals
Given the action-adventure tone of the show during Roman's tenure, especially during the 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the character's position as a cop and secret agent, he has had numerous adversaries, rivals, and enemies. They have included:
- Stefano DiMera (international gangster; Roman's worst enemy; when he couldn't manage to kill Roman after several attempts, he held Roman prisoner instead for seven years while "replacing" him with John Black, whom he'd brainwashed into believing he was Roman)
- Victor Kiriakis (reformed gangster and former paramour of Roman's mother Caroline; more of a foil to "RoJohn" than to Roman)
- Orpheus (former ISA partner and double agent; held Roman responsible for the accidental shooting death of his wife)
- Miguel Torres (drug dealer and father of Bianca and Rafi)
- Rafi Torres (son of Miguel and successor as leader of his drug gang)
- Ernesto Toscano ("poor man's Stefano"; crooked wine merchant and gangster, and supposed father of Isabella)
- Forrest Alamain aka John Black (unwitting "Roman imposter" and rival for the affections of Roman's wife Marlena Evans)
- Lawrence Alamain (crooked businessman; murderer of Roman's brother-in-law Steve Johnson; John Black's adopted brother and biological first cousin; his quest for a Mexican treasure began the unraveling of the plot that resulted in the "two Romans" and reestablished John Black as a separate character)
- Tony DiMera (gangster; son and successor of Stefano; half-brother of John Black; mastermind of the Salem Serial Killer hoax; involved in political terrorism)
