Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Another sock

Hey, remember helping me a few months back with a certain User:Gomes000 who abused multiple socks to do the same kind of disruptive edits? Well he came again with another sock, User:CarloPt, and it's doing the exact same thing that got its previous accounts blocked. Could you do something about this? Updating/addition to Whoop Dee Doo's Wiki page

Hello, I am the Co-Director of the non-profit arts organization Whoop Dee Doo. Today (12.13.21) I began updating our page (https://en.wikipedia.org/Whoop_Dee_Doo_(variety_show)) since its has not been updated since 2008? My edits were not confirmed and I was sent to this page. In the message explaining why the edits were not confirmed - it said I did not provide enough detail in my summary as to why my updates were necessary? Could you please revert our page back to my recent edits, I was not finished with them and need to continue adequately finishing them with correct sources and content. thanks so much!

Changes to TVU Networks Misplaced Pages Page

Hi,

I'm on the marketing team for TVU Networks. I was updating our wikipedia page to replace "buzzword" descriptions and also to update the page to add missing products we've since introduced. I then saw that all my updates were removed and a notice from you saying they were removed for lack of citation.

This is the first I've encountered this. Is adding the location of the actual website page for each product as a citation sufficient or is something more needed? Any guidance you can provide would be much appreciated. 2601:641:8080:BD50:798D:BBB8:EF43:3302 (talk) 23:57, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Reverting my changes for Wijdan Michael

Hey, I was in the midst of updating the references when you reverted my changes. ] Go ahead and revert the changes back. I don't want to play a game of tag. The source for the information is an interview. This was my first edit, maybe give it 15 mins so I can finish before reverting changes next time, thank you.

Changes to Webb Telescope entry

This edited section, about the person, whom the telescope was named after, had grown much larger than many of the sections describing the mission, history, science and plans of the actual telescope--which is the topic of the entry. This is not a dispute about the contents. I moved references to footnotes. A larger presentation of this discussion really belongs at the biography of James Webb, not the telescope. Thank you.

Edit (Pendleton Heights High School)

Hi,

I noticed you reverted my edit. Yes, I mistakenly typed reliable source, however a different user also reverted the same IP user's edits that are also similar. Can you explain on how can we make this work? Thanks. Severestorm28 (talk) 02:05, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

There is no reliable source, so no good reason to revert the IP. Materialscientist (talk) 02:09, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Agreed, but didn't RainbowLover334148 also revert? Additionally, this IP wasn't typing in an edit summary. Not trying to blame this user, but just a thought. Severestorm28 (talk) 02:12, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Problem user, possible block evader

User:LOLI'mfriggin silly, seems to be evading a block. Most recent edits were reinstating the edits of a block evading IP. Others seem just plain disruptive, like very badly misplacing templates and such, and adding "Frankish language" to the short description of Classical Japanese, which is utter nonsense, as Frankish languages never went east of modern Germany. Requesting help from you as a recently active Administrator

In eleven years of editing Misplaced Pages, I have never gone to ANI, nor have I done this. It was never necessary. I think it is now. On the ANI page, it says this: "Want to skip the drama? Check the Recently Active Admins list for admins who may be able to help directly." Your name came up first. I recognize your name. I have a situation with two other editors. One said that I was calling for a fatwa on Misplaced Pages and warned me to heed WP:LEGAL. I am a Jewish woman who lives in the United States. I did not call for a fatwa on Misplaced Pages! I merely implored that this editor show some respect to people of Muslim or Jewish or Christian or Hindu faith.

Next, I was told that I didn't know the definition of ignoramus, then was subjected to a long rant, then told that I should feel shame. This is humiliating and degrading to be treated this way. I will leave two links to the talk page where this happened. Please help me? I can just run away but I don't want to. I am afraid to go to ANI becvause maybe they will say it isn't rude enough behavior. Let me leave the links for you. If you don't have time or inclination to get involved, can you please refer me elsewhere?

They want to use an infobox for Abraham and other religious figures, and said that Allah and the Hindu deities are equivalent to Donald Duck. I commented here. Next, they responded as described above, and I reacted here. I left many days in between my comments and responses, in order to avoid heated argument. I am not trying to say that every religious figure is real! The Donald Duck comparison as well as the allegation that there are billions of "ignormasuses" in the world and these two Misplaced Pages editors are not is offensive and horrid. The talk page is intact so you can see it in its full inglorious current form here. https://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:Abraham#Infobox_character and here https://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:Abraham#RfC_on_infobox_type Our highly unpleasant exchange is very visible toward the bottom of each of those two sections.

Thank you for considering my request.--FeralOink (talk) 08:27, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

This is getting bad. They are shouting at me in all-caps, saying I get all emotional, and that I am very confused. It is kind of bizarre. All the two of them needed to do was explain what they thought I misunderstood. They do that, but then they conclude with more insults and derision. I then respond because I want to defend myself. If they didn't ridicule me, I wouldn't get upset. Finally, there is no need to make fun of Abraham by derisively referring to him as "ahistorical Abie" repeatedly. That is gratuitous and unnecessary. Help?--FeralOink (talk) 11:32, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

For the record, I included myself as part of the ignoramuses, since I have never written anything peer-reviewed about the historicity of Abraham; I'm not a scholar. tgeorgescu (talk) 12:22, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi. I'll go straight to it and say that you shouldn't have reverted my edit. The edit summary was "rm fixed". Paul B. Kidd IP

Thanks for that block. Similar edits were made a few months ago from another IP in the same area. Looking at the contribs, I see there's now a pretty broad rangeblock there due to sockpuppetry. Do you know if there's any reason to suspect the IP there/here is connected to any of that, and if a longer or larger block might be justified? (cc Drmies, who placed the rangeblock) Vaticidalprophet 08:32, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

  • User:Vaticidalprophet, I don't remember the details of the block but my edit summary suggests it's not simple socking--in other words, there's not one clearly identifiable master, and so connecting the two will be difficult. Maybe semi-protection is a better solution, if the nuisance returns. Drmies (talk) 15:43, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Edit in Wakfu's page

I would like to point out your removal of my edit under the argument of lacking source is a bit misguided because I'm a long-time player of Wakfu and know the game's lore and mechanic top-to-bottom, while I know this is a bit of a weak argument as I ask you to trust a random guy on the internet, you can't really demand a source when describing an MMO when the source is playing the actual game to see it. The "Story" section of the game is very incomplete and innacurate, the Gameplay section contain a few minor innacuracies (such as "Wakfu grants characters all their spells by the early stages and thereafter allows players to strengthen them." which is a mechanic removed several years ago) and the Series section contain a massive innacuracy about a "Wakfu movie in 2018" which simply does not exist unless thats a misinterpreted concept of the OVA episodes between season 2 and 3 which, put together, are pretty much one movie. Also, Season 4 is in production, worth mentioning.

As a long-time fan of Wakfu, player of the game, watcher of the serie, I ask you to be careful with this page because it's absurdly innacurate as a whole. 201.29.94.169 (talk) 06:28, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Techy help and image licence help needed

Hi Materialscientist - and happy new year!

Please could you kindly help me with an image whose file page I cannot track down, and whose logo looks like copyvio? You can view it on Template:Did you know nominations/Grand Bargain (humanitarian reform) - it's the blue image with the circular logo. If you click on it, you get a redirect destination, here on Commons. So the image is a cropped version of the redirect destination file.

My guess is that the circular logo is a copyvio, because it's an original artwork. I don't know whether it could have been published originally as a free-use image, or whether there is some governmental loophole in some countries which allows this sort of international official logo to be a free use image. But in the absence of that knowledge, my instinct says, delete it unless we can find an image filepage with an acceptable licence for it. I'm leaving it on the template for the moment, until you can look at it.

So please could you kindly look at it, and do whatever you think is right? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 11:53, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

There are many reasons not to delete this image. Just to mention a couple, 1, 2. Best wishes. Materialscientist (talk) 22:36, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Thank you very much for this. Please could you kindly explain why I cannot find a filepage for the image, though? If I could have found that, maybe it would have mentioned your linked discussion? This is the first time in all these years that I have come across an image where I can't find a filepage for it. Storye book (talk) 10:14, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

On top of this page, go to "preferences", "Gadgets", then select the option "Redirect image links to Commons for files hosted there". Materialscientist (talk) 06:37, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for trying to solve this puzzle. Sorry to be a nuisance about this, but that doesn't help me, because when following your above instruction I saw that I already have that option selected. I'm now thinking that the best thing that I can do, for my own peace of mind, is to personally crop out one of the logos from the original file, and put that on a new image filepage, in the normal manner for cropped extracts. The cropped logo image on the DYK template and on the article page has this template {{CSS image crop|Image=No Lost Generation at World Humanitarian Summit Istanbul.jpg|bSize=1000|cWidth=300|cHeight=150|oTop=1|oLeft=1|Location=right}} which I suppose must be the mechanism forcing the redirect to the original image filepage. Sorry I should have told you this earlier. I have no idea what it is for, and why it redirects away from the image's filepage (if it ever had one). Storye book (talk) 12:03, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
I am not sure what logo do you need. If you mean the logo from File:ECHO plane.jpg, then it is the flag of European Union, we've got thousands of its versions on Commons . Best wishes. Materialscientist (talk) 22:37, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
No, not the circle of stars. This one, which doesn't appear to have its own licence or its own filepage. Storye book (talk) 10:58, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
No Lost Generation at World Humanitarian Summit Istanbul.jpg

.

License-wise, this one falls under de minimis. There is a CC-BY-4.0 license on its page (user's own photo). Best wishes. Materialscientist (talk) 21:30, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

So both the crop and the original share the same image filepage? I had been wondering whether the above template is actually doing the cropping over the ether? That would make sense (well sci-fi sense to me, anyway). I think I had better stop bothering you over this. Thank you for your kind patience with my questions. Storye book (talk) 21:40, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
This is not a crop, but a zoom into the original image, thanks to Wikimedia software. Materialscientist (talk) 00:12, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

IPs vandalizing Strictly Come Dancing (series 17)

Materialscientist, I hope you are well.

There has been a series of IPs vandalizing the article since January 6. Initially, it was 94.193.22.242, who worked their way through the weeks and the couples. On January 12, perhaps I'd been warning them of consequences, 94.193.22.242 edited the Week 8 section at 18:18, and then 2a02:c7f:6c7c:5100:e985:d54a:b5b9:495a took over 36 minutes later with an edit on Week 9. Today, two more IPs from the 2a02:c7f:6c7c:5100 number space edited Week 10, using the same false names as the prior editors.

Is there any way to block this user under their many guises? Whoever it is clearly isn't here to build an encyclopedia, but rather falsify information in it. Thank you for anything you can do. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:37, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Respect to Bovini

The page talks about how the european bison was SUPPOSEDELY a hybrid even though there is evidence that its result of incomplete lineage sorting during divergence of Bos and Bison from their common ancestors and that the European Bison is the descendant of Bison Shoenski, and the fact that the steppe bison lived alongside the european bison. But even more, there is evidence that breeding bos with bison has result in genetic pollution of bison. 56FireLeafs 7:15 January 17 2022

Proposed deletion of Aad Oudt

Notice

The article Aad Oudt has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lacks significant coverage

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Talk:Little Amal

Hi, Materialscientist. Re: MMELan21 (talkcontribs) Is there any chance that you could block that editor, who may be well-meaning, but they do not understand the rules of WP, and they have admitted working on behalf of the producer of the project outlined in the above article. On the Little Amal talkpage linked above, I have written lengthy explanations to assist that editor but they have not replied, or attempted to edit usefully. Today they removed some of the existing free-use images from the Little Amal article, and replaced them with speedy-deletion-tagged images (listed here) which had been uploaded by the same editor, without the permission of the original authors or copyright owners. Bearing in mind that they have not shown any sign of learning or cooperating with advice, is there any chance that they could be blocked? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 17:57, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Zegarac

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Zegarac requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Misplaced Pages page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Misplaced Pages pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Liz 19:04, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Question

So, a while ago, I obviously didn't understand the purpose of Misplaced Pages, and I just thought it was a place for sharing knowledge, not a place for storing verified, encyclopedic knowledge. I'm truly sorry I got so heated and angry at you after you deleted my page (Ultimate, solid and gargantuan cardinals) which was created by me, and that was obviously the right thing to do regarding the purpose of Misplaced Pages. However, please could you do me a favor? Could you please view what was written on that page and give it to me so I can put it somewhere else where it will be appreciated? If you do this, I would be so glad, as I don't want to lose all of that knowledge.

IP editor block

Hello, Materialscientist,

I hope you are well. I came across 157.83.97.242, a blocked IP account and you imposed a 10 year block against it. It was my understanding that IP blocks should be limited in duration unless it's a school block or a persistent vandal and while this IP's recent edits were vandalism, there was some constructive editing coming from this address and this seems like quite a long-term block. Would you consider shortening it to 6 months or 1 year? Of course, there might be some other details regarding this editor that I'm unaware of so maybe you cold clue me in. Thanks for considering this request. Liz 00:37, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

SiC disc wafer photos - more details?

Hello Mr. Materialscientist. Today while reading article Silicon_carbide, I was gratified to see your photo of 3 disc-wafers of transparent (greenish) SiC.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/File:SiC_crystals.JPG

I find this glimpse valuable, with growing electronic engineering use of SiC and GaN to make transistors that surpass Si capabilities. Anyway, there seems to be little in the description, beyond 'SiC' and '3mm diameter'. Any chance you could identify the crystal polytype and/or carrier density or impurity level of those samples? (Even tentatively, if from memory... I would hope that could be inserted in the Description field.) Thanks for considering. jimswen (talk) 19:06, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Creating SALTed article

Hey, I'm not quite sure of the protocol in this scenario, so I'll jump right into it: after several deletes from over a decade ago, the article Dijon Talton was WP:SALTed (by you) in 2015. I don't know what the state of the article was over those years, but since most of the supporting sources to back up NACTOR and NCREATIVE that I've found are from more recently, and one of the AfDs mentions promotional language, I'll assume it deserved it. Now, as I mention, I've found more sources. I wrote Draft:Dijon Talton today (as a challenge) and I don't know what to do with it: will AfC somehow automatically flag the draft for admin? Is there a separate process for SALTed articles for creation? Is this something to take to the admin noticeboard? Just thought I'd ask you, since you locked it. Kingsif (talk) 20:16, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

I've removed create protection. Seven years have passed, his notability has changed, and your draft is much better sourced than the previous versions. (That said, I haven't evaluated the notability, just had a brief look). Materialscientist (talk) 10:36, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I live in the country of Poland (with article section I had updated) and I'm sure I know better then you what parties are ruling in it.

Thereof, for the future, please don't blindly follow the tool's suggestion without verificarion if the tool doesn't return a false positive, like in this case Mcgiwer (talk) 08:46, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Your edit completely mangled the article and deleted most of the information. Besides, it was unsourced. Zaereth (talk) 09:15, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

It wasn't even labelled as vandalism - it was flagged as vandalism or a test edit (which implies no bad intention on your part). Templates not appearing properly

Hi Materialscientist. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but some WP features are showing wrongly on my screen, and I don't know why. I guess it must be something in my Preferences, or maybe my PC is faulty. I am guessing it is not a technical problem with WP, because there has been no notification of that, and I have seen no-one else complain of it.

The main effect of this is that yesterday all the infobox templates were showing incorrectly; that fault has corrected itself today. Also, yesterday and today, the userboxes on my userpages (English WP and Commons) are showing wrongly; specifically the logos in each userbox are showing in enlarged text instead of little pictures.

So please could you tell me whether there is a WP fault that I don't know about, or whether I should check my preferences (which I had not changed before the fault appeared) or should I check my PC? Thanks. Storye book (talk) 16:44, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

It appears this editor has not learned from being blocked back in May. They have continued to change results of battles regardless of references. --Kansas Bear (talk) 02:57, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

Disruptive IP

You blocked 76.68.44.50 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) on 5 June for disruptive editing. They're back at it. – .O. 09:00, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Disruptive editor

Hi Materialscientist,

When you get a moment, can you look at North American F-86 Sabre. There has been a slow edit war going on there since at least November, if not longer, where an editor using various IPs keeps introducing grammatical errors based on a misunderstanding of English syntax. We tried discussing on the talk page, but to no avail. I don't know what can be done, because blocking doesn't seem like a good option. Perhaps a little page protection? Maybe you would have a better idea. Thanks in advance. Zaereth (talk) 22:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Page about Gmail references

So this fellow edits and “permanently” protects the article about gmail from “vandalism” but his added source and quote that he adds about 1.5 billion active users in 2019 references a mainstream media article that itself has no references or sources. And you wonder why nobody puts any credibility in wikipedia as an info source! 118.149.85.180 (talk) 13:33, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

No we don't. There has been a lot of research done on the matter. It's even part of our core-policy. Zaereth (talk) 18:37, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Healthtripseo

Hi, thanks for blocking Healthtripseo. They've since posted more spam on User talk:Healthtripseo. Would you extend the block to TPA as well? Cheers, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:03, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks! DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:17, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

User:Vanishedone1

This user may be a sockpuppet of Factfanatic1. I noticed this user editing on Laura Harrier, and they have an extremely similar editing pattern to ff1. In addition, their username is also nearly identical to another of his socks. I know this user hasn't edited in a while, but blocking may be helpful to prevent more block evading edits. I was wondering if you could take a look at this user. 47.227.95.73 (talk) 00:37, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Your block of Irresistible95

Irresistible95 (talk · contribs) is clearly socking as 123.51.4.212 (talk · contribs). All the IPs edits are to restore undone edits by Irresistible95. Meters (talk) 03:52, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Semi-protection is not sufficient

Hi, you put semi-protection on List of Albanians of Turkey and Albanians in Turkey to prevent the removal of content by some IPs. The person who used the IPs created an account to bypass the semi-protection and is using misleading edit summaries. Can you take a look at it? Ktrimi991 (talk) 17:29, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

The editor has several warnings on their talk page. Ktrimi991 (talk) 17:32, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi Materialscientist, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed' and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned prolific creators of articles where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Misplaced Pages's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Schwede66 23:42, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Jfgoofy

You blocked this user indef back in 2014. He says he was younger then and has grown up now; he can deal better with some of his issues. I have put his unblock request on hold so you can review it. Daniel Case (talk) 06:24, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Unblocking is Ok with me. I assume Jgfoofy was lying about their age back then , and not now. Materialscientist (talk) 06:54, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
