Revision as of 00:01, 18 August 2022

This non-free media file should be replaced with a smaller version to comply with Misplaced Pages's non-free content policy and United States copyright law. According to Misplaced Pages's policy for non-free content, the amount of copyrighted work used under fair use should be as little as possible. In particular, non-free media on Misplaced Pages should not be usable as substitutes for the original work. A high-resolution non-free image is questionable fair use and may be deleted per Misplaced Pages's copyright policy.

In most cases, this reduction will occur automatically: simply wait a while and a bot will resize the image file according to the guideline at WP:IMAGERES. When an automatic reduction does not occur or a manual reduction is desired, the size of an image may be reduced in an image editing program or by saving and re-uploading a suitably sized thumbnail.

Once a reduced version of this file has been uploaded: Please replace this template with {{subst:orphaned non-free revisions}} (through source edit) or {{orphaned non-free revisions|date=24 December 2024}} (through VisualEditor or Twinkle).Fair usetrue

Summary

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Photograph of the archaeological site of Ai-Khanoum in Afghanistan, taken by the DAFA team led by Paul Bernard, in 1978. Taken from the site's acropolis, the photo shows the ruins of the main sanctuary in the foreground, further ruins behind, and the Oxus river in the distance.

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) To illustrate the ruins of Ai-Khanoum before their looting during the Afghanistan conflicts.
Not replaceable with
free media because (WP:NFCC#1)
The site was comprehensively looted and ransacked during the Afghan Civil Wars; accounts testify that it now looks completely different, so this photo is impossible to replicate today. All photos taken in the 1970s were by the same organisation, so it is impossible to find a copyright-free image.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) Only used in one article (Ai-Khanoum).
Respect for
commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2)
There are none.

This non-free media file has been set up with as small a version as possible, to comply with Misplaced Pages's non-free content policy and United States copyright law. The current resolution has been manually selected to achieve as small an image as possible without destroying the image content. According to Misplaced Pages's policy for non-free content, the amount of non-free work should be as little as possible. In particular, non-free media on Misplaced Pages should not be usable as substitutes for the original work.

Licensing

CopyrightedThis image is a faithful digitisation of a unique historic image, and the copyright for it is most likely held by the person who created the image or the agency employing the person. It is believed that the use of this image may qualify as non-free use under the Copyright law of the United States. Any other uses of this image, on Misplaced Pages or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Misplaced Pages:Non-free content for more information.

Please remember that the non-free content criteria require that non-free images on Misplaced Pages must not " used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted media." Use of historic images from press agencies must only be of a transformative nature, when the image itself is the subject of commentary rather than the event it depicts (which is the original market role, and is not allowed per policy).
