Marcus Mosiah Garvey (August 17 1887 - June 10 1940) led a movement calling for people of African descent to "redeem" Africa, and for the European colonial powers to leave Africa. He was elected Emperor of Africa. He lived for years in New York City, and then in London.

Garvey was born in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica.
