==History== ==About Via LA==
The headquarters of Via LA is located in San Francisco, with additional offices in Denver, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Washington D.C. The company is an independently managed company, owned by industry-leading participants who have over 25 years of IP licensing experience.
MPEG LA started operations in July 1997 immediately after receiving a ] Business Review Letter.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.justice.gov/atr/public/busreview/215742.htm|title=MPEG LA Business Review Letter|access-date=2013-05-13}}</ref> During formation of the ] standard, a working group of companies that participated in the formation of the ] standard recognized that the biggest challenge to adoption was efficient access to essential patents owned by many patent owners. That ultimately led to a group of various ] patent owners to form MPEG LA, which in turn created the first modern-day ] as a solution. The majority of patents underlying MPEG-2 technology were owned by three companies: ] (311 patents), ] (198 patents) and ] (119 patents).<ref>{{cite web |title=MPEG-2 Patent List |url=https://www.mpegla.com/wp-content/uploads/m2-att1.pdf |website=MPEG LA |access-date=7 July 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License Program |url=https://www.mpegla.com/programs/mpeg-2/ |website=MPEG LA |access-date=29 May 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190529164538/https://www.mpegla.com/programs/mpeg-2/ |archive-date=29 May 2019|url-status=live}}</ref>

Via LA has operated dozens of licensing programs for various technologies consisting of nearly 50,000 patents in over 130 countries with more than 500 patent holders and nearly 10,000 licensees. The patent pools cover a broad range of technologies including several audio/video encoding and decoding codecs.
In June 2012, MPEG LA announced a call for patents essential to the ] standard.<ref>{{Cite press release |url=http://www.mpegla.com/Lists/MPEG%20LA%20News%20List/Attachments/82/n-12-06-26.pdf |title=MPEG LA Announces Call for Patents Essential to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) |publisher=MPEG LA |location=Denver, CO |date=2012-06-26 |access-date=2013-05-13 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130514055624/http://www.mpegla.com/Lists/MPEG%20LA%20News%20List/Attachments/82/n-12-06-26.pdf |archive-date=2013-05-14 }}</ref>

Via LA combines the expertise, infrastructure, and relationships of two of the industry’s most successful patent pool administrators: MPEG LA and Via Licensing; thereby creating a new collaborative licensing organization with a rich portfolio of patents and intellectual property licensing programs, hundreds of licensors, and thousands of licensees.
In September 2012, MPEG LA launched Librassay, which makes diagnostic patent rights from some of the world's leading research institutions available to everyone through a single license. Organizations which have included patents in Librassay include ]; ]; ]; ] (NIH); ]; The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University; The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania; ]; and ] (WARF).<ref>{{Cite press release |url=http://www.mpegla.com/Lists/MPEG%20LA%20News%20List/Attachments/83/n-12-09-27.pdf|title=MPEG LA's Librassay® Removes Patent Barriers to Diagnostics for Personalized Medicine |publisher=MPEG LA |location=Denver, CO |date=2012-09-27 |access-date=2013-05-13}}</ref><ref>{{Cite press release |url=http://www.mpegla.com/Lists/MPEG%20LA%20News%20List/Attachments/87/n-13-02-21.pdf|title=MPEG LA Continues to Expand Librassay® with Addition of WARF |publisher=MPEG LA |location=Denver, CO |date=2013-02-21 |access-date=2013-05-13}}</ref>

Via Licensing Alliance (also known as Via LA) is the collaborative licensing leader, dedicated to accelerating global technology adoption, fostering participation, and generating return on innovation with balanced licensing solutions for innovators and manufacturers of all sizes around the globe.

About Via LA

The headquarters of Via LA is located in San Francisco, with additional offices in Denver, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Washington D.C. The company is an independently managed company, owned by industry-leading participants who have over 25 years of IP licensing experience.

Via LA has operated dozens of licensing programs for various technologies consisting of nearly 50,000 patents in over 130 countries with more than 500 patent holders and nearly 10,000 licensees. The patent pools cover a broad range of technologies including several audio/video encoding and decoding codecs.

The Via LA company is led by President Heath Hoglund who was previously the president at Via Licensing; while Larry Horn serves as an advisor after retiring as CEO of MPEG LA.
