Stephen Eugene Schulte (b. January 21, 1946) is an American politician, activist and policy. He is a former councilman of , California and was elected its mayor in June of 1986. Schulte is a resident of , California.

Political Career

In 1984, when the City of West Hollywood, California was established as an independent city, Schulte was elected to the City Council along with , and . He later served as the City’s third mayor from 1986 to 1987. He was deeply involved in the City’s organizational, legislative, personnel and policy decisions.  Schulte was central to the creation of the city’s Public Safety Commission that monitored anti-gay behavior by the deputies of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Schulte was also instrumental in the establishing of a gay and lesbian task force to reshape city policies and succeeded in halting the development of a 23 million dollar civic center in West Hollywood Park with a coalition of anti-development activists. Project Angel Food

Schulte was Executive Director of (1992-1993), a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles County which still provides prepared meals for people who are home-bound with illness.  He joined the organization at a time of deep structural and financial challenges and worked to see stability, growth and progressive employee policies embedded into the agency.  He clashed with Project Angel Food’s founder, which resulted in his dismissal. Employees of Project Angel Food responded by demanding the resignation of Williamson and the reinstatement of Schulte as director. Williamson resigned and Schulte was not reinstated.

Trivia

Along with and of the , Schulte is famous for his "big, gay mustache."
