Dominion is a 2018 Australian documentary film written and directed by Chris Delforce. Dominion primarily claims to expose common and inhumane animal agriculture practices in farms and abattoirs in Australia.

Production

Dominion was written, directed, and produced by animal rights activist Chris Delforce. Delforce had been vegan and an activist for eight years prior to the film's release. Initially passionate about human rights, he began focusing on animal rights after becoming frustrated by the slow pace of change.

The documentary was primarily filmed with hidden cameras and drones inside Australian farms and abattoirs, demonstrating the killing of livestock through methods such as using carbon dioxide to gas pigs, and maceration of chicks. Delforce hoped to make the Australian livestock industry more transparent.

Dominion was managed by the animal protection and animal rights organisation, Farm Transparency Project, previously known as Aussie Farms. It was filmed to be a feature-length documentary sequel to Lucent (2014), which mostly focused on the Australian pig farming industry, and was produced as part of two crowdfunding campaigns that raised US$19,796 and €57,710, respectively. The film also received funding from the Australian animal rights organisation Voiceless.

Content

Dominion features narration by the actors Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara and Sadie Sink, as well as the singer Sia. The film features footage of cruelty and abuse in the livestock industry, focusing its message on the rights and wellbeing of the animals being filmed.

Release

The documentary premiered in Melbourne on 29 March 2018 at a sold-out screening.

Reception

Following its release, Dominion received the award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival, and Delforce won Best Director at the Festigious International Film Festival.

Dominion has been used as a focal point for protest groups, who encourage the general public to watch the documentary.

Guerrilla-style marketing for the film

Australian farmers have been critical of the film, seeing it as an "attack on Australian farming". The Australian Meat Industry Council Chief Executive, Patrick Hutchinson, has said, "What the film shows is not representative of the practices of the wider industry."
