Hi Levivich, | |||
My name is Dr. Tim Koskie and I am a researcher at the Centre for Media Transition (CMT) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). We are conducting a study on the implications of content-generating AI systems such as ChatGPT for knowledge integrity on Misplaced Pages, and are approaching you because you have participated in discussions on this topic on Wikimedia pages.
If you are interested, we would like to invite you to participate in our study. It would involve joining either a focus group discussion or an interview (around 1 hour), in person at Wikimania in Singapore if you are going to be there, or online at a future date. At these sessions we would ask you questions about how you think generative AI will impact Misplaced Pages, as well as about the kinds of work you do on Misplaced Pages.
The project is funded by the Wikimedia Research Fund grant programme. You can find out more about the project here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/Research:Implications_of_ChatGPT_for_knowledge_integrity_on_Wikipedia
If you are interested, let me know and I will forward you some more detailed information on the project. ] (]) 04:12, 15 August 2023 (UTC) |

July music
my story today |
sharing my flowers of resilience -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:38, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
on today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. "my" arbcase began 10 years ago (yesterday actually), and my resilience continues. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:02, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Today Jahrhundertring, and I'm listening to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival (pictured), - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
AI is no surprise
Quillbot has been around for quite a while now, and is a helpful paraphrasing tool and grammar checker. I wondered how much longer it would be before AI would be filling the gap for our shrinking volunteer base. Yes, humans still have to oversee it but fewer will be needed because, depending on how a particular AI was "trained" and is used, the elimination of a potentially biased response is highly dependent on how a request is phrased, and the manner in which the material is posed. If the human doesn't recognize or care if the AI result is biased, that's another issue. I have often wondered how much longer Jimmy & the WMF would be willing to host a community that tends to be hostile toward the very entity that provides their platform and pays all the bills. I've never read anything in the ToU that says volunteers will be rewarded a big piece of the pie for all the work they do, in fact, quite the opposite is true. Real life shows us how issues are resolved by big businesses and governments on a global scale when the work force starts making demands and causing problems. I realize many will have a much different perspective from mine but in retrospect, I did not view Jimbo's relinquishment of his tools as a victory for the community, nor have I viewed the hostility displayed by some in the community whenever the WMF stepped in to resolve seemingly unresolvable issues as a win for the community. Regardless of what side you're on or what hill you choose to die on, the end result doesn't change. Hostile is probably too harsh for the following example, and disgruntled doesn't quite fit, so for lack of a better term ... hostile workers get replaced by automation - problem solved. Hostile volunteers get replaced by AI - problem solved. It's only a matter of time. The new focus now is what the WMF calls "the movement" which is global, more in tune with humanity, and it is gaining momentum. It is also likely to be what inspires future donations. - @Atsme: re: "hostile workers get replaced by automation" – the WMF has neither the skills nor the motivation to automate content creation and maintenance themselves. These initiatives will come from outside the WMF. Craig Newmark has an interest in funding tools and processes to combat disinformation on Misplaced Pages. A significant portion of the community – the self-declared "content creators" – are generally indifferent if not hostile towards editors with automation skills. Witness the current RfA in which my second-ever nominee is getting beaten down and trypt up for doing stupid things like voting to enforce the Misplaced Pages:Overcategorization/User categories guideline's "Categories that are jokes/nonsense are inappropriate" guidance. But no, Category:Wikipedians also known as Le Poisson de Trypto is not a joke nor nonsense and he is too "rules-based" and lacks empathy for suggesting that it is. Automation tools need to follow rules, otherwise they just make things up and create disinformation rather than combat it. – wbm1058 (talk) 15:08, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- AI is whatever the user makes it. It can purposely be biased, or purposely not be biased. I can attest to that because I use it quite a bit. Atsme 💬 📧 16:34, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Wbm, I hope you don't take what I said personally, as having been a reflection on you, because I certainly don't feel that way. (Although I appreciate the "trypt" pun.) As it happens, I thought the ChatGPT version was better written than Levivich's was. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:56, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Take that! :)
I see you're only semi-active now but I had to say this: back at the start of February you !voted at the deletion discussion for Stan Robb that we should Merge with Canton Bulldogs: because there isn't enough WP:RS material to write a biography of the player.
It was kept, and I made it a little goal of mine to prove that a decent biography could be written. Since then, I've expanded it to be over 15,000 bytes, had it featured at DYK, and was just able to get it to achieve good article status. So take that, Levivich! :) BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:28, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
