The Jews of Dagestan still exist and have a community. I suggest editing the paragraph beginning with "A relatively large community of native Tati speaking Jews, designated by the Soviet state censuses as the "Mountain Jews" were also present in this same coastal areas, but since 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union they have migrated to Israel and the United States." "Tati" should be "Tat". I'm not sure the Tati are the same people. " ' They developed their own language known as "Tat," a combination of Persian (Farsi) mixed heavily with Hebrew. Today Derbent's population of 3,000 Jews (within a mostly Muslim population of 100,000) maintains its own Tat Theater and Tat-language newspaper.' " http://www.chabad.org/news/article_cdo/aid/1036/jewish/Mountain-Jews-Of-Caucasus-Cling-To-Traditions.htm
Add a comma after "Mountain Jews". Substitute "they have" with "many have". Labellesanslebete (talk) 19:33, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

History????
No history sectio? What's up with that?71.192.134.75 (talk) 02:44, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, there's a history now and some of it might be accurate, but some of it is absurdly wrong. I'm going to edit the section about the Golden Horde. The Golden Horde was the khanate that evolved from the Mongol invasions, so it couldn't have had an alliance that protected anyone in the Caucasus from the invasions. The statement is an anachronism. If there's some underlying truth, then someone can come behind me and put it back in with wording that makes sense. Ftjrwrites (talk) 21:02, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
The history section is a little suspect regarding neutral POV. The communists are referred to as 'Bolsheviks' (majority-ites) but the Whites are referred to as 'reactionaries', the Ottoman invaders are referred to as 'liberating' Dagestan, but no foundation is provided for presenting the occupation of this multi-ethnic region by a foreign (Turkish) power as a 'liberation' from its former (Russian) rulers. Perhaps its just my own POV but the selection of terms seems at times like a collaboration between an unreconstructed Marxist and an Islamist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.230.120.241 (talk) 07:48, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Alleged Dagestan / Dahae connection
Some western classicists believe Dagestan derives from the Dahae aka Daae people, who were described as living on the northeast and east side of the Caspian by Strabo. I'm not saying there's any truth to it, but I assume somebody has looked into the question. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrcautious (talk • contribs) 22:02, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Map is almost useless
Nice picture of Russia at the top of the page. Oh, that barely colored tiny area on the left edge is Dagestan. Yeah, that really conveyed its location immediately (not). Too many maps are like this on Misplaced Pages. Come on people, are we even trying anymore? How hard would it be to add an arrow or a circle or a zoomed-in callout? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.48.4.128 (talk) 17:16, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
source
why so few source? it must be more sourcing.
Source of the history section?
What is the source for the history section? There are no inline citations. I will start removing some passages in the future if no source is provided and if I cannot easily find one. Offliner (talk) 00:18, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

- One should note somewhere, all though that is the "official-ized" Chechen name for Dagestan, there are still Chechens who use "Süliin"(or Suliyn) for "Dagestani" and name Dagestan likewise. The thing is that "Süliin" means "Avar". --Yalens (talk) 20:58, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
The lezgian name is mis-transliterated = Lezgian – Республика Дагъустан (Suwarin xalq'pačaħ) can anyone please clarify — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.34.210.189 (talk) 04:49, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Dagestan name
The word Daghestan or Daghistan means "land of throne", it is derived from the Daghestanian "Dagh" word meaning throne and Persian suffix -stan meaning "land of".
This is true. İranians called Dagestan / land of mountains , so russians called here / strana gor. But autochtone nations Dargins , Leks , Avars... etc people called here Daghestan , the country of throne. Turkic and İranian and Russian claims are false. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.106.177.240 (talk) 17:57, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
i delete shepherd stories , mansur ushurman's. there is no connection between mansur and dagestan. mansur was leader of chechni , circassians. Dagestan is so far , so high !
- The Dagestanis call and spell the name of their land Dagestan, not Daghestan, English uses both names, so can anybody explain why the form that is both Dagestani and English is not used, but was selected spelling that is NOT used by the natives? Following WP practices, the native form of the name takes precedent. Please state your objections to renaming from Daghestan to Dagestan. Barefact (talk) 20:50, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Politics of Dagestan
The link to the main 'Politics of Dagestan' page goes to the page 'Dagestan' which it is on (apologies for the convoluted nature of that sentence), furthermore there appears to be no page called 'Politics of Dagestan' on Misplaced Pages as a whole. Should this link therefore be removed? Or someone create the page relevant? Thenextpm (talk) 14:21, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- One can most certainly create such a page, but until then the "main link" in any section should never be a red link or, as was the case here, a self-redirect. I've removed the link for now. Thanks for catching this! Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); December 17, 2014; 16:07 (UTC)

As Mongolian authority gradually eroded
The Mongolian (presumably Empire) turns up in this article without any other mention: "As Mongolian authority gradually eroded." It would be helpful if the article mentioned Mongolian influence earlier and how that impacted the area at the time so that we understand how retreat of the Mongolian influence is significant.
