Winiary Nestlé Polska S.A. Oddział w Kaliszu, known more commonly as Winiary, is a Polish food processing company based in the Kalisz borough of Winiary.

Currently, the company is part of Nestlé, specialising in convenience food as well as quick to prepare food (mostly pulverised) Instant ready-cooked meals, sauces, soups (mostly instant noodles), jelly, kissel and blancmange. Winiary also produces sets of seasoning, which are pulverised and in liquid form (from concentrate).

History

The company was founded in 1941 by Alfred Nowacki, Polish spy, returning from Germany, and member of the Polish resistance movement in World War II.

The factory was a focal point of the Kalisz unit of the Home Army. Nowacki fictitiously employed his Polish underground associates at the factory. In March 1944 he was arrested by the Gestapo, then subjected to brutal investigation in Łódź, and eventually sentenced to death and executed in nearby Skarszew in 1945.

During 2002–2003, Winiary received various awards for its Majonez Dekoracyjny (Decoration Mayonnaise) product.

In 1998, the image of the company was affected by sanitary epidemiological reconnaissance, which discovered the bacteria salmonella in Winiary's pulverised soups. The company later admitted that the cause of the salmonella bacteria was from imported dried onions. Although the products did not cause any health concerns (the pulverised soups require boiling, in which the bacteria die during the heat treating), confirmed by the sanitary epidemiological reconnaissance, the situation caused negative public opinions and publicity in the media.

Products

During the war, the plant was supposed to provide food for the German army. Mainly vegetable concentrates, dried vegetables and soups were produced. Fruit was also dried.

After the war and nationalization, the factory continued to produce dried vegetables, liquid soup spices, powdered soups and bouillon cubes. But the production was expanded to include sauces, puddings, jellies and drinks. The plant was also modernized and a new vegetable drying room, boiler room, water softening station and laboratory were built.

In the 1960s, dinner and tomato concentrates were added to the offer.

Since 1970, Winiary has developed dynamically. New production buildings were built and more packaging machines appeared in the plant. A drying and freeze-drying department was established and canned food for children was produced. In 1974, the production of decorative mayonnaise began - a product that has won numerous awards and has been the most preferred by consumers for years.

In the 1980s, the offer was significantly expanded. At that time, Winiary's production included: crisps, carbonated water, pâtés, sandwich spreads, ready-made canned meals, and canned vegetables and meat. The richer offer necessitated the construction of a modern drying plant, which was put into operation in 1986. 120 people worked in the drying plant itself.

In the 1990s, low-fat mayonnaises and pastas were also offered. At that time, approximately 250 tons of products reached the market every day.

Currently, the annual production tonnage is over 90,000 tons, the factory produces over 600 products, including the famous traditional Winiary red borscht and decorative mayonnaise. The product portfolio is successively diversified with new proposals that are in line with the latest nutritional trends and the needs of modern consumers.

The plant has been modernized many times, thanks to which new products could appear on the market. Already in the first years after concluding the Nestlé S.A. Polska agreement, various modern technologies in food production were introduced. The investment value amounted to PLN 60 million. US dollars, which amounted to 30 million. more than provided for in the privatization agreement. All production departments were modernized, including: soups, liquid spices, cereals for children and desserts. A new line for the production of decorative mayonnaise was created. The warehouses of raw materials and finished products were also modernized. Automation was introduced, which improved working conditions. The marketing, promotion and sales system was modernized. The aesthetics of the packaging was taken care of. Today, the Nestlé Polska S.A. factory in Kalisz is a modern plant that is a showcase of Kalisz, a plant that constantly invests in the development of production through the use of the latest technologies based on digitization and robotics.
