To looksmax, or looksmaxxing, is a practice that involves a variation of skin-care, hair care, dietary restrictions, and other routines in an attempt to improve one’s physical appearance, especially among young men. A product of youth culture in the 2020s, the practice is based on the Incel subculture and originated from the internet forum Looksmax.org, until gaining widespread popularity on social media platform TikTok.
The phenomenon has birthed extreme physical exercises, including "Mewing" which involves tongue exercises to develop a more defined jaw structure. "Hardmaxxers" refer to people involved in cosmetic procedures such as chin implants, rhinoplasty, and injectables.
The movement has received criticism for raising body insecurities and supporting the involuntary celibate culture.
