The History of the British Isles has been one of struggle and competition between peoples that occupy the various parts of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and the smaller adjacent islands, but one coloured by external forces and the influence that these people upon the world themselves. Today, the British Isles contains two sovereign states, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and three dependencies, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Within the United Kingdom there are two further kingdoms, England and Scotland, a principality, Wales, and a province, Northern Ireland. The British monarch as head of state of all the people of the islands. since the Union of the Crowns in 1603 and the 1949 Republic of Ireland Act. Partly because of this, many contemporary historians avoid the term British Isles due to the complexity of relations between the peoples of the archipelago .
