On June 21, 2024, four people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting at the Mad Butcher supermarket in Fordyce, Arkansas, United States.

Shooting

At 11:38 a.m. CDT, police received calls about an active shooter outside of the Mad Butcher supermarket. The shooting, carried out by a lone wolf, began in the supermarket's parking lot, close to U.S Route 79. The shooter shot 11 people, killing three and wounding eight, whose injuries ranged from non-life threatening to critical. A fourth person died on the day after the shooting. Arkansas State Police immediately engaged with the shooter upon arrival. Two officers suffered non-life threatening injuries during the ensuing shootout, and the suspect was grazed in the head. He was critically injured, but was also in a non-life threatening condition. The suspect was taken into custody.

Accused

The Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey (born 1979) of neighboring New Edinburg, Arkansas. At the time of the shooting, Posey was the owner of a Kingsland landscaping company who operated it since 2010 as well as a local trucking service. Earlier records show that Posey started his career in 1996 as a Walmart sales clerk in Fordyce while he was still in high school before attending the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 1997.

Posey was once arrested by the New York State Police and charged with a single fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon charge near Watertown, New York, on November 14, 2011, after attempting to bring a weapon through the gates of Fort Drum, pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and was released on a $200 fine. Police confiscated the gun, which was not registered in New York.
