Notability of mayors
Mayors or Cathaoirligh of Irish cities or other local government areas are not presumed to be notable under WP:POLITICIAN, or specifically under WP:NSUBPOL. However, I’d propose two exceptions:
- the Lord Mayor of Dublin, being the first citizen of the capital and largest city (and in practice all mayors dating to 1873 have an article); and
- the Limerick Mayor, being a directly-elected office with a five-year term.
(For clarity, I’m referring to the individuals holding these offices, not the articles on the offices themselves). Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:03, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
Review requested on Draft:Malachy Steenson
Hi, this recently elected councillor has had a lot of press coverage down the years which merits notability under WP:POLITICIAN. I would appreciate a review to have this moved to article mainspace. 51.37.25.21 (talk) 12:52, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
Pedantic point about MEPs
According to a tweet by Gavan Reilly (which I can't link to - I only saw a screenshot of it and I'm not on that site any more, but his account is @gavreilly), MEPs only take office on July 17, so the TDs who were elected as MEPs stay as TDs until July 16. I'm not proposing we go change anything back, but some may want to. Bastun 17:57, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- We probably should! If people can't rely on Misplaced Pages to be accurate, what can they rely on! Iveagh Gardens (talk) 17:41, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Secularism in the Republic of Ireland
The article has been tagged for original research, neutral point of view and being written like an essay for over four years now. Would this be the right forum to ask if anyone can take a look at it and improve it? (I'm not sure I have the knowledge or background to do so.) Autarch (talk) 14:15, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

- FWIW, I have addressed (and raised) additional issues with this article. At Talk:Secularism in the Republic of Ireland. Discussion can continue there. Guliolopez (talk) 16:15, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- On a similar note, Feminism in the Republic of Ireland could do with a lookover. It's one I had come across as needing some review around the time of the referendums earlier this year. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 17:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
Desmond Fennell
The article has been tagged under Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style, WP:NOTESSAY, WP:FANCRUFT, WP:TONE, possible breach of WP:NPOV and WP:PRIMARY for several years now. Does anybody have the knowledge or background to improve it? Autarch (talk) 19:25, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
Seats before in election infoboxes
Looking over pages for general elections, I'm have a slight caution about the "Seats Before" row in the infobox. Take 1951 Irish general election for example: it lists Clann na Poblachta as having 10 seats before the election. However, Browne had left before the election, and from my memory of reading about the period, he wasn't the only one. The Fine Gael figure should be lower because of the death of Joseph Mongan and the resignation of Sir John Esmonde, 14th Baronet (see 13th Dáil#Changes). Last week I added a note of the vacancy in the 8th Dáil from the appointment of James Geoghegan to the Supreme Court in December 1936, which hadn't previously been accounted for. All of which suggests to me that the Seats before figure in various elections is unreliable, and in some cases inaccurate, relying on small amount of original research. FWIW, it's not a row used in 2019 United Kingdom general election, etc., but I had drafted this comment here before noticing those as a comparison. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:37, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- I’ve considered this more, after checking each of these figures again. I’ve come to the view that between vacancies not filled and defections, the figure is unreliable, and it’s better to remove it entirely. Take another instance: Donnellan being expelled from FG in the 25th Dáil. I added that last year, but it’s almost certain that there are other similar instances that haven’t been captured; even if 95% accurate, it’s not reliable, and should therefore be removed throughout the Irish election pages.
