First Union National Bank of ] was originally formed in ] with the merger of Union National Bank and First National Bank and Trust Company of ]. Over the decades, First Union merged with over 80 other banks, and was one of the largest banks in the ] in ] when an acrimonious public competition ensued between Wachovia and ]-based ].
