On 18 October 2024, at least two gunmen infiltrated Israel from Jordan in the Neot Hakikar area, south of the Dead Sea. The gunmen ambushed Israeli troops and opened fire on them, wounding two of them moderately. The IDF promptly responded and killed two of the gunmen, with a third attacker probably escaping. Residents of Neot Hakikar were instructed to remain indoors as the IDF and police searched for the third terrorist.

Background

On 26 October 1994 a peace treaty was signed between Israel and Jordan, which included the commitment of each side to cooperate against terrorism. This included thwarting border attacks, smuggling, preventing any hostile attack against the other and not cooperating with any terrorist organization against the other. Relations between Israel and Jordan had been tense since the start of the Israel-Hamas War in October 2023, with Jordan having recalled its embassador to Israel. Nontheless, in some respects, security cooperation remained close; in April 2024, Jordan helped Israel in shooting down Iranian missiles launched against Israel.

On the morning of September 8, 2024, a Jordanian truck driver carried out a shooting attack at the Allenby Bridge, a border terminal between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, killing three Israeli civilians.

The truck driver approached Israeli staff at the terminal and then opened fire, killing three. The perpetrator was shot and killed by Israeli security forces.

Following the attack, Israel identified the three victims as workers at the border terminal and residents of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Jordan identified the attacker as one of its citizens, named Maher Al-Jazy, a lone perpetrator from Al-Ḥuseīniyah, southern Jordan, while condemning attacks against civilians and calling for de-escalation.

On the streets in Jordan, some citizens gathered to celebrate the attack, amid widespread anger over the war in Gaza.

On 16 October 2024, Hamas militant and de facto leader Yahya Sinwar was killed the previous day in a gunfight with the 828th Bislamach Brigade in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, according to the IDF and Shin Bet. Tank shells were fired at a booby-trapped building and a drone equipped with a camera was brought in to ensure that it was empty of militants. The Israel Police said in a statement that the body matched Sinwar's dental records and fingerprints. Sinwar, who was one of Israel's most wanted men after the 7 October attack, was in a building with two others. The military operation was described as random and not planned in advance.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Sinwar's death marks the beginning of a new era without Hamas's rule over Gaza, urging Gazans to seize the opportunity to break free from its tyranny, and adding that those holding hostages will be spared if they surrender and release them. U.S. President Joe Biden stated "This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world," comparing Sinwar's death to the killing of Osama bin Laden and emphasizing that it presents an opportunity for a "day after" in Gaza without Hamas. The notice of Sinwar's death was publicly announced on 17 October 2024.

The attack

On 18 October 2024, at least two gunmen infiltrated Israel from Jordan near Neot Hakikar in the Arava valley, south of the Dead Sea. The gunmen, who were clad in millitary uniform, ambushed Israeli troops and opened fire, wounding an IDF soldier and a reservist moderately. The IDF promptly responded and killed two of the gunmen. According to police, the gunmen attempted to enter Moshav Neot Hakikar, but were stopped by the army and the community's security squad. Residents of Neot Hakikar were instructed to remain indoors while the IDF and police, in colloboration with the Israeli Air Force, began searching for a third terrorist who probably escaped.
