Filminuto 1, 1980

Filminuto is an animated series that accurately captures the Cuban humor of the 1980s, considered the golden age of animation in Cuba, created by Juan Padrón, Cuban film director. Juan Padrón (degree in Art History) was a cartoonist, caricaturist and comic artist, creator of Elpidio Valdés, who directed several feature films in which the iconic character is the protagonist, similar to Vampires in Havana (1985) and the animated series Filminuto. Filminuto first appeared in 1980; producer: Paco Prats (Havana, January 5, 1944 - Havana, September 2, 2020) Cuban producer and screenwriter of animated films and documentaries.

Until 1980, Juan Padrón's production was aimed entirely at children, with adult viewers taking a backseat. However, in that year Padrón began a new line of work aimed at entertaining adults, based on the idea of making several short jokes with different themes and putting them together in a cartoon. This is how Filminutos was born. Initially, Padrón's characters were vampires, executioners and goblins. Later, directors Mario Rivas, Tulio Raggi and others joined, with their own designs and themes; in general, the Filminutos series opened a wide field of experimentation, allowing the use of new techniques and a much more innovative design.

In 1975 Juan Padrón returned to the ICAIC, although this time not as an apprentice. Vampires, another series made by Padrón in 1967 for 'El Sable', a supplement of Juventud Rebelde was shut down by a decision that it was not the type of humor desired for the young generation. Later, after Padrón re-joined the ICAIC, he resumed working with Vampires and Filminutos, this time, without facing protest. Later, however, since the series was not made for children, the censors attacked it, arguing that the animation studios should only make movies for children. Filminutos survived the censors because it was selling unexpectedly well.
