Legal issues
On 25 November 2024, Das was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Dhaka Airport. He was charged with sedition following allegations related to a rally where religious flags were allegedly raised over the national flag. Adviser of the interim government Nahid Islam alleged that Das had been working on a plan to destroy harmony in the country.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was presented before the Chattogram Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on 26 November 2024, where Magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam ordered his detention after rejecting his bail application. Following his arrest, protests demanding his release erupted across Dhaka, Chattogram, and other regions of Bangladesh. His lawyers requested that he be allowed to follow religious practices while in custody, to which the court instructed compliance with prison regulations.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern over his arrest and urged the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety and protection of minority communities, emphasizing their right to peaceful assembly. Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Tuesday, termed the Indian government's remarks regarding the arrest of Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das as "baseless." The statement further mentioned that such remarks are contrary to the friendly relations between the two countries. Additionally, it stated that India has misrepresented the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Chinmoy Das.
