Surau Al Firdaus is a surau (Muslim prayer area) located Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last surviving village in Singapore. It was built in 1967 and actively functions as a small mosque and Islamic center.

History

The surau was established in the 1960s by the residents of Kampong Lorong Buangkok. According to the current caretaker of the surau, the place was built in 1967, with help from donations. The surau was intended as a place of prayer for the Malay Muslim families living in the village. It was reconstructed in 1999 to accomodate more worshippers.

Currently, the surau is still active and functions as a local mosque. It is not only used by the residents of the village but also by people from the city. The surau also hosts Islamic classes and related activities.

Construction

The present surau is a wooden structure with a zinc roof, as is the case with other houses in the village. A metal pole attached to the roof bears a crescent and star symbol. The construction of the surau is generally described as being in the style of the architecture of Malaysia.
