Devane (or Devne/Deone/Davane/Davne) (Marathi: देवणे/ दवणे) is a Maratha Toponymic clan surname native to the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, meaning divine or god/deity-like.
Etymology
Marathi surnames usually end with the suffix 'kar' or 'e', indicating the place of origin. or represents family traditions and professions of ancestors. So they must have originally belonged to Deoni village in Udgir, Maharashtra. Some historians consider Devanagere as the origin city.
Origin
There are numerous theories on the origin of the Davanes. Prominent of those theories are of claiming scion from the Chandravansh and the Yadu king of Lunar Dynasty. Chandrasen was otherwise called Soma Raja who was the son of the Kshatriya king Chandrasena, himself the descendant of Kartavirya Arjuna of the Haiyaya family of the Lunar Kshatriya Dynasty.
In 1305 A.D. Mandu or Mandavgadh in Central India was destroyed by the invaders during the reign of Rajput king Malak Dev. His Millitary Commander was Kuka. This province was inhabited by many Chandraseniya and Chitragupta Kayasthas. After the massacre of Ain-ul-Mulk, the Commander of Allauddin Khilji, the Chitragupta Kayasthas left for the North and the Chandraseniya Kayasthas migrated to the southern India. Some of the ancient family names of these kshatriya kayasthas were territorial, such as Kshipre, Tungare, Javale, Saipute, Korde, Davane, Chitre, Tivekar, and Devpare, pointing to places extending from Oudh in North India to Maval, near Poona, to which place this small band of colonists migrated by stages of conquering hordes that came upon them one after another.
History
Davane was a territorial name from Daman, but it is supposed that these people came from Devnagar as their original seat. Some accounts suggest they originated from Davangere district, while Marathi records highlight their valor, calling them KalaPyada. Chitradurga Fort was their stronghold and the heart of their kingdom. These feudal lords of Chitradurga were the rulers of eastern Karnataka, governing the region from 1300 to 1779 CE. They started as local chiefs, known as Dandanayaks, under the Hoysala rule and later gained recognition from the Vijayanagar kings, who made them governors. Devanagare later got corrupted into Davane or Devane.
Earlier the Devanes from Daman and the Chandraseniya proper, did not marry each other, despite sharing a common ancestry. However, this division was purely geographical, and the two groups have recently reconciled and resumed intermarriage. During the Muhammadan and Maratha periods, they held key roles as Military Commanders and revenue officials.
Devanes are now included in the Maratha clan system as a subclan of Shitoles who served Kolhapur Princely State of Chhatrapatis. They were the revenue collecting powers of Maratha Kingdom in Karnataka and Poona region.
Ethinicity
MacCrindle's Ancient India, p. 46, mentioned the marriage of a Gupta chief with the Macedonian bride that Alexander gave him, and further possibility of the absorption of foreign blood. The Macedonian settlements in Koh-Daman and the presence of a Daman on the Western coast, with Davanes living there today, suggest a historical connection. They may have been part of the early ruling races mentioned by Mr. Hewitt. The Davanes, being fairer than the typical locals of Daman, could indicate a blending of Western ancestry with the dominant tribes along the Bombay coast, at a time when intermarriage between different races was common, and rigid caste rules had not yet emerged
Coming from the Indo-Aryan tract in the North, under the name chandrasen, and perhaps marrying fair Western women, the Davane's may have also acquired a tinge of the local Dravidian blood from Southern tracts like Guddappa, and this would account for their forming a ethnicity midway between the accepted types of the Indo-Aryan and Scytho-Dravidian races.
Status
They are prominent in the Marathwada and Kolhapur regions of Maharashtra with many holding high political and institutional positions. Most of them belong to (Maratha) caste, and trace themselves to Yadav Chandravanshiya dynasty. Some also belong to Vani community. They usually follow Vaishnavism and Veerashaivism and many of them had Gotrapurusha of Lord Veerabhadra.
