Current essay

An editor removed the essay flag with the incorrect comment that it was a failed guideline. That is simply incorrect. Although this essay had been considered as a guideline earlier, its creators decided it would work better as an essay... and that's what it is. If there is any language in it remaining that is too suggestive of its prior origin, change a few words, but the essay remains useful. LotLE×talk 15:07, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

As an essay, is a good one and should remain. ≈ jossi ≈ t@ 19:20, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

List Namespace

A discussion is going on here to introduce seperate namespace. A request to bugzilla (7561) also have been made for this. Your response is invited on the proposal page. Regards, Shyam 20:37, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

List of Fictional X

I've noticed recently that there are a lot of these kinds of lists. See Lists of fictional things for a few examples. Some of these are useful, some are not. But there isn't that much discussion on these things in this essay. I think something should be added, but I'm uncertain as to what. Mister.Manticore 04:13, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Survey of English Dialects

I've noticed that someone has tagged this page recently as an unencyclopedic list. The thing is that the page is going to be really useful for those who are interested in dialects. I know that many Americans can never understand how English people get so interested in dialects, but they do. It is hard to find a single list elsewhere on the internet on all of the S.E.D. sites; the information is all diffuse. I am prepared to join the cause of defending Misplaced Pages lists as a result. Alternatives: "Categories are self-maintaining."

Categories are not self-maintaining. They require people to add or subtract to & from the categories by adding & deleting the category information from the individual article. In fact they are harder to maintain than a list, because you can't "watchlist" a category for inclusion/exclusion.

... Another alternative to explore is the "What links here" toolbox; we really should be promoting that more, because it meets needs that none of the others do. --lquilter 15:22, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikilinks

Suggested addition:

Don't wikilink every item on the list, without making sure every link goes to an appropriate article - not a disambiguation page, and especially not a different topic with the same name. A reader clicking such a misdirected link might take a long time to realize it's a dead end with no information on the topic he wants. Also, it interferes with WikiProject Disambiguation.
