Regarding Jreferee's Rfa
Hello, I noticed your comment in the Rfa. I respect your opinion; this is not an attempt to start an argument. But I must say: I don't see how you could have read the oppose votes and the links included therein and say that the candidate's carefully researching controversy is something you rest your support on. Look, it's pretty clear to me this Rfa is going to be successful, and there are a lot of big names supporting. But I'm against the reasoning behind some of the support, based on things like user page, "brilliant" article contribution, and sometimes no reasoning at all. The fact is an admin, in my very humble opinion, is someone trusted for their cautious equanimity and resistance to bias or rush to judgment, and that is something that even the few oppose votes clearly demonstrate to be lacking in this candidate. Disabling link to www.deathcamps.org/occupation/ghettolist.htm
I am a little confused about the reason for disabling the link in my comments on the talk page. If it is because there is a copyright issue--which is not clear to my small brain from the link you provided--OK. However, if it is because it is a "soon-to-be-discredited" link then it is perhaps premature to disable the link, particularly since the url is indicated. I stand by my comments on the usefulness of the page. Isn't it a little unusual to edit somebody's comments on a talk page rather than just adding a comment. But if it is a copyright issue then I understand even if it isn't clear to me why only disabling the link deals with the issue. Or perhaps there is something else?--Joel Mc 03:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. I don't think anybody on Misplaced Pages or Meta is judging the value of the content of these links -- it's all about copyright and legal responsibilities.
- I'm not in charge and not even an admin, just someone who does a lot of spam cleanup. When I saw that these links were being blacklisted, I checked and saw that 40+ talk pages had those links and were about to get "locked up" from editing, so I went around breaking the links. If you read the discussion at m:Talk:Spam blacklist#Intellectual property dispute (permanent link), you'll see that this is apparently an OTRS issue of some urgency.
- If a link is on the m:Spam blacklist, then any page it appears on is frozen until the link is removed. Editors trying to save an edit get a message flash up on their screen that the talk page is non-compliant and changes cannot be saved until the offending link is deleted. On a long talk page, it may take 10 to 15 minutes to find the link, especially if it's embedded. Many people miss the one sentence that tells them what to do about it so they end up frustrated and confused at either m:Talk:Spam blacklist#Proposed removals or MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist asking for help and waiting for an answer. So I'm spending several hours trying to do this now to spare a lot of other editors from frustration. (I still haven't found the links on several extremely long talk pages.)
- These two sites are not blacklisted yet but I think that's only because they're trying to find someone on the other languages' Wikipedias to take the links out of article space. Once they're out of articles, then they'll be blacklisted whether or not they're still on talk pages. --A. B. 12:38, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Please correct or let us know how you have came to this conclusion with proof. You also warned this user: As well preventing anyone from linking to them from any site that uses the MediaWiki spam blacklist. Are you telling this user to control everyone's actions on the Internet, wikipedia.org? Impossible! Please don't erase and make me publish a copy on a page that gets logged. Let's work this out together.

Thank you very much for responding my uncle is from southern ( Jackson) ohio originally which speaks appalachian , Isn't southern appalachian a southern accent . I would just like to let you know that southern Hillsboro, Jackson, Portsmouth Ohio is extremily Hillbilly Appalachian half of my family is from this area and they are redneck hillbilly in fact they are more hillbilly then my other family which is okie/texan which is more aristocrat southern/western, thanks alot

- Thanks. I knew without a doubt your warnings were not malicious. You were not alone. Those edits of Operationmajoritypower's at first looked very fishy -- one of those change-the number-slightly vandal attacks which I think are especially insidious. When I looked closer, they turned out to be totally legit. I saw he'd merely reversed the order of the stats. I only happened to see your warnings because I did the same double-take myself on another of his edits and looked at his talk page. Fortunately, it wasn't my bed time yet! --A. movie reviews
How were my links to MovieMirth wrong? In the guideline of external links that are ok it says reviews and articles are fine. All my MovieMirth links were to movie reviews about bad movies. How did those violate any rules?

- What Misplaced Pages is not, in particular:
- "Misplaced Pages is not a soapbox" (i.e., self-promotion and advertising)
- "Misplaced Pages is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files"
- Blocking Policy
- As it stands now, you're not yet blocked, but if you add any more links you may lose your editing privileges
- Spam Guideline
- The other two editors also told you not to add these links again, but you did so anyway.
- Even if your links were encyclopedia-quality, they still would be inappropriate because you are not allowed to add links to your own site -- it's a conflict of interest and doing this is considered spamming and dealt with as spam.

- I'd say from looking at the history, it's unlikely these links will come off the blacklist. Multiple editors communicated to you that this sort of linking was unacceptable. You might have gotten one last chance but then we found you had been spamming other wikipedias as well. Once that happens, it's fairly standard for sites to get blacklisted since it's so hard to manage cross-wiki spamming otherwise.

- We had not previously realized you'd had used 3 different accounts or that you were adding links on other Wikipedias. You did not, however, lose your editing privileges, which would have been the next step after the warning you got. As a means of dealing with multi-wikipedia, multi-account spamming, your links were blacklisted; that's a form of software blocking to keep any more from being added to any of our Wikipedias. --A. Southern Thunder
Haha, yes, nice catch. I know it's a bit unorthodox, but it was a sort of a test to see if articles like that could stand (Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Vandalism studies). Most vandalism that we know about is usually non-wikified, but there are some instances where that is not the case. Just recently there was an article about a mullet festival backed up with sources pointing to event calendars, proving the festival existed. What we didn't find out until after a long time was that the Mullet Festival was in fact about fish, not hair styles, so the entire paragraph was false and had illuded us for the longest time. I was testing something like that, but I honestly forgot about it. May I ask how you found it? And just so you know, that article is the only test one I've made. --TinMan 03:40, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- About 10 weeks ago, I was checking out Category: Appalachian culture and saw this article. I deleted it from the category and noted Davidson County, North Carolina was hardly in the hills. Then I looked at it a little more and tagged it for notability.. Yesterday, I went through my contribution history, checking the status of articles I'd tagged for notability this year and prod'ing the ones that were still tagged and inadequately referenced.

Appalachian English
Thanks for the encouragement! I've gotten diverted into ecology and climate topics, but I'm sure I'll come round to the Appalachians again. It is interesting how American regional topics of many kinds generate heated opinions and debate, sometimes seeming to edge into a dogmatic us-vs-them kinda thing. Maybe that's part of why I'm looking at ecology geography pages now -- much less hot-headedness over there! But I'll return -- my wikipediaing seems to flit from subject to subject semi-randomly. Im sorry for hurting your feelings it just cracks me up when people try to discuss my own ancestry as if its is their own in Southern -Ohio we are very very very very very different then places like Northern-Ohio dialect religion ancestry . Don't take it personal I forget how sensitive Yankees are Im sorry.Your saying hey Southern-Ohio is not the South. But let me tell you more then 75% of the people of southern-ohio are Southern Appalachian ethnicity like myself. the rest are Irish-German immigrants from the 1700-1800's that came frome virginia and kentucky come here check it out just don't call any-one a yankee.Im done with this website .
