Jahangirnagar University (Bangla: জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a reputed public university of Bangladesh. It is the one and only residential university in the country. The university was established in 1970 by the Jahangirnagar Muslim University Ordinance, 1970 (later amended as Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973), During the two preceding years, it operated as a project. Its first Vice-Chancellor took up office on September 24, 1970. The first group of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in four departments: Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics. Its formal inauguration was delayed until January 12, 1971, when the university was formally launched by Vice Admiral S. M. Ahsan, the then-Chancellor.
The university was formally launched on 12 January 1970. Every year this day is celebrated with much pomp and grandour. Academic year of this university spans from 1st July to 30th June. In 2001, the university had a total of 4,985 students, 347 teachers, 157 officers and 1,100 other employees.

Location and campus

The Central Shaheed Minar of the University, which commemorates the martyrs of the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

The university stands on the west side of the Asian Highway, popularly known as the Dhaka-Aricha Road, and is only 32 kilometers away from the capital. Spread over a land area of 697.56 acres (2.8 km²), the campus lies between the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) and the Savar Cantonment, on the north of which is the National Monument (Jatiyo Smriti Soudho). The topography of the land, with its gentle rise and plains, is soothing to the eye. The bodies of water sprawling around the campus make an excellent habitat for the winter birds that flock there every year by the thousands, making bird-watching a favorite pastime for many visitors, students and staff. Jahangirnagar is the only residential university of Bangladesh. The beauty of this university campus attracts tourists. The university is completely residential, every student has an accommodation in one of the dormitories of the university.

Halls

There are 11 halls (dormitories) for students: 5 for females and 6 for males. The halls for female students are:

Other Establishments

The Central Library of the university is located in a convenient place between the main academic buildings and the dormitories. Airy with ample glass openings, the library is an elegant piece of modern architecture and has a collection of over 95,000 titles. The university has a gymnasium, a well-equipped swimming pool, and a central cafeteria. The university has its own medical centre that provides 24-hour service free of charge. Adequate bus services between the campus and Dhaka city are also provided to the students and teachers and other employees of the university. There is also an amazing amphitheatre and a Teacher-Students Centre (TSC) in the campus.

Jahangirnagar Programmers Club (JPC)

The students of the Computer Science and Engineering made this club. This club helps to raise interest of programming. With help of this club students can organise programming contest as they wish. The TA of that club teach students about different programming languages.

English language Programme (ELP) club

Only the ELP club of pharmacy department can invite students to join in the ELP club for increasing their language efficiency in english. And it also provides a three months course for learning english. It also issue a certificate for students who pass the course. There are two classes in each week and the classes are hold on in the afternoon.
