The Mihranids were are family which claimed the be of Sassanian Persian descent but may also have been Parthians, who were placed on the throne of Albania (484-88) after the region had gone thirty years without a ruler. The family was placed in power by the Sassanid Balas, who decided to put Vacagan, son of Yazdegerd II and brother of the former king Vace, on the throne (by this version of accounts, the family would have had to be Persian). Vacagan was a patron of Christianity and forced all the noblemen to convert back to Christianity (after denounced it due to an edict issued by Yazdegerd) and waged war on Magianism and idolatry. Some of the most important of the family in the 7th century included Varaz-Grigor, his son Javanshir, and Varaz-Trdat I (the latter two held the Persian title of Arranshah). The family came to an end with the assassination of Varaz-Trdat II by Nerseh Pilippean (822-23) and their kingdom was incorporated into Armenia.
