Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables);
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (unless it had fewer than 1,500 characters, and has been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days).
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like , or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world,
    • short and concise (under about 200 characters),
    • neutral, and
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have non-stub text that brings out interesting and relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|January 11}} Thanks, ~~~~

Better: "that the pasilalinic-sympathetic compass was a hoax which purported to show a telepathic connection between snails? DS 19:36, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I disagree there - mentioning that it is a hoax reduces the impact of the hook. violet/riga (t) 23:47, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
  • comment:The hook (and the article) has a factual error and needs to be changed, The Archers is actually the world's longest running radio drama, with with over 15,000 episodes since 1951 and still airing on BBC radio 4.

or

How about this short and concise version:
  • ...that in the 1919 Pinsk massacre thirty-five Jewish residents of Pinsk were executed by the Polish Army? Balcer 22:12, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
    • Piotrus' hook is out of the question since it's weaselising. Balcer's hook is OK bye the factuality but is it attention catching enough? So, what is the curious detail? That in massacre 35 people were shot? Or that they were shot by the PL Army? Or that they were Jews? Point is that in that war when the Polish army captured cities Jews were often abused anyway. The non-trivial detail that the commander gets promoted in the aftermath of the massacre seems a better hook than the very fact that the murder took place. But I leave it to whoever is on duty when the time for an update is up. --Irpen 02:21, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
      • What weaseling? It is your version that is a non-neutral weasel, my vesion quotes directly from the article. That an officer got promoted during a major war is not suprising, that civilian on all sides (there were far more than two) suffered is not suprising neither; that an international commission investigated this incident is however more interesting. Balcer factual version also seems like a reasonable compromise.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  02:29, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
        • The problem I have with Irpen's version is that it suggests that the Polish Army approved of the massacre and rewarded the officer responsible by promoting him. However, there is no evidence of that in the article itself, hence that hook is misleading. Balcer 02:36, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
          • This is deriving too much from my version. The only thing it implies is that the officer's presiding over a massacre did not prevent him from being promoted, while the promotion may have been for other reasons. And this is exactly what happened. --Irpen 02:53, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
            • This is not what your version is implying, and anyway as I mentioned earlier you are making errors: for example, the officer who ordered the massacre (unammed lieutant) and the officer who got promoted (major -> colonel Łuczyński) are not the same person... -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  04:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
              • Another mischaracterization here. My version speaks about the officer under whose command the incident took place, not the officer who ordered the shooting. In the military, you know, the superiors are held responsible for actions that take place under their command even if they did not directly order them. --Irpen 04:34, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I suggest you guys move your all too predictable bickering to some other page. Irpen's nomination has the finest hook, but it should be shortened. Alternative nominations basically have no hook. • ...that British music publisher Boosey & Hawkes owns copyrights to much major 20th century music, including works by Bartók, Bernstein, Britten, Elliott Carter, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Steve Reich and Stravinsky? • Suggest narrowing the list to three components and listing the full names. — Deckiller 16:11, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
      • We can remove one or two names if you think the hook is too long (although it's only slightly over the 200-character limit), but I think it may be better to show more than three names because the significance of this hook is that Boosey & Hawkes owns the copyrights of many well-known 20th-century composers. It is probably unnecessary to state these famous composers' first names, as they are all known simply by their surnames. Cheers, Jacklee 23:15, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
    • Can we get a %? That would be more informative. Thanks, Blnguyen (cranky admin anniversary) 07:32, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
      • What do you mean? Cheers, Jacklee 15:50, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
        • I think he means something like they own the copyrights to 50% of the music published in the UK in the twentieth century. I think such a number would be difficult to find or verify, though. Personally, I think the original hook is fine, as the list of composers reflects a number of styles. I would add a minimalist and serialist to expand the variety. Since the nom says "works by" and not "complete catalogue," we could add (say) Steve Reich and Elliott Carter? Having at least one more recent composer is good too. Finally, last names seems ok to me here, because if you don't recognize them in a list like that you probably don't know who they are by their full names, either. Rigadoun (talk) 20:10, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
      • I suppose you could use an "objective" measure of "great" 20th century composers, and see what percentage of those composers Boosey & Hawkes owns copyrights for. Needless to say, it's somewhat arbitrary to define who a "major" composer is, but perhaps using any reputable list would suffice. For example, here is the BBC Music Magazine's poll of their reader's favorite 20th Century Composers
1.Britten 2.Vaughan Williams 3.Shostakovich / Stravinsky 4.Sibelius 5.Bartok / Elgar / Prokofiev / Simpson / Strauss 6.Rachmaninoff 7.Gershwin / Glass / Gorecki / Janacek / Lutoslawski / Messiaen / Poulenc / Tippett 8.Barber / Berg / Bernstein / Birtwhistle / Copland / Delius / Nielsen / Schwantner / Takemitsu / Tavener / Villa-Lobos
      • I don't have any information on the percentage of music copyrights by great composers held by Boosey & Hawkes, and agree it would be difficult to find out as well as to define which ones are "great". As suggested by Rigadoun, I've taken out two of the composers from the original list and added Elliott Carter and Steve Reich. I thought it might be better to give their full names as they might not be familiar to readers (or to me), but feel free to edit the hook and take out their first names if you think it would be more consistent just to state their surnames. Cheers, Jacklee 22:30, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
