The Expulsion of the Tamils from Colombo is considered as a tantamount to the ethnic cleansing by the government of Sri Lanka.
This incident happened when at least 400 Tamils were evicted by the Police on June 2007. The police have said that these people were staying in Colombo without a valid reason. The evicted were sent back to Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
Expulsion
The police stormed many low-budget hostels in the Tamil-majority areas of Colombo and asked the people to leave in the middle of the night. They were then put into buses and were sent away from Colombo. The police have said that this mass evication was needed to prevent any more bomb attacks from the LTTE. The ministry also added the attacks were planned and executed from the lodgings. However, some of the evicted people were there for medical reasons.
Concern
A local media rights group has called this an act of ethnic cleansing. The group also said that this type of act reminds people of what "Hitler did to the Jews" . Others Rights group have said that this could be the start of ethnic cleansing campaign by the Srilankan Government. Further eight more rights group had written a open letter to the president and has claimed that act was 'a flagrant violation of (freedom of movement) and a disgrace to humanity'. The United States has also condemn this human right violations by the government
Reaction
Sri Lanka Supreme Court on June 8 2007 issued an injunction to the Sri Lanka Police to stop the evacuation of residents of Colombo lodges as a reaction for the fundamental rights petition of the Center for Policy Alternatives, Sri Lanka (CPA).
As a result of this Police boarded, 185 out of 270 who evicted from Colombo to Vavuniya on 5 buses to bring them back to Colombo.
