Danzig is the German name of the city of Gdańsk, that has historically belonged to both the Germans and the Poles. Since the end of the Second World War, in 1945, it has belonged to the modern state of Poland.
Due to the voting in this Misplaced Pages, "Danzig" refers the city for period between 1308 and 1945: for example, the Free City of Danzig. In German, the city continues to be known as "Danzig", just as in Polish the city was, and has always been, known as "Gdańsk", ever since its foundation in 980.
