A misconception is what is widely held to be true but isn't. A disputed fact is one where no one really knows the real truth (see controversy).
Examples of misconceptions
- America was discovered by Christopher Columbus
- The ship Mary Celeste was called Marie Celeste
- What the pyramids were built to show
- Saturn is the only planet with rings
- Queen Victoria was only married once. (She may have been married to John Brown)
- The world was created in six days (a statement from the Bible)
- That if enough people wrote Jedi under religion in the UK 2001 census it would become an officially recognised religion by the Home Office. There is only one officially recognised religion in the UK, the Protestant Church.
- Surrealism is an artistic movement
