Selena Quintanilla was 5 feet 4 inch powerhouse of energy. Born in Freeport (Lake Jackson Texas) on April 16, 1971. She later made her home in Corpus Christi Texas where she continued her musical career. She had such a demand for personal apperances, she didn't have time to attend regular school. Therefore, she obtained her education through correspondence courses. They say behind every sucessful lady, there's a smart man ---- her father Abraham Quintanilla Jr., a former singer with the original Los Dinos from 1957-1972.
Selena, her brother, Abe III (bass), and sister, Suzette (drums), are a second generation of Los Dinos. It's other two members who started in the band were Ricky Vela on keyboards and Roger Garcia on guitar.
This spectacular recording artist became interested in music at the age of six. She made her first public apperance at her father's Mexican Restaurant in Lake Jackson at eight and recorded her first record at nine.
Selena signed up with Capitol EMI in 1989, where her musical career took off furthermore, Chris Perez replaced Roger Garcia as guitar player, He (Chris) later on became involved with Selena, they fell in love and got married on April 2, 1992. Selena, Chris and the family all toured together and lived next door to each other as well.
Selena's father was approached by a lady named Yolanda Saldivar who later became the fan club president and also ran Selena's boutiques. It was Selena's dream to design her own clothing line. The family found out Yolanda embezelled money and decided to fire Yolanda. Selena went back to talk to Yolanda and to retrieve paperwork for tax purposes. While they talked and argued Yolanda fired a gun at Selena and shot her in the back, a few hours later Selena passed away at Memorial Medical Center. It was a shock to the whole hispanic community and surrounding areas.
Now Selena is a legend and is known world wide. Her father has a museum to honor her memory and there is a bronze life-sized statue of Selena on Ocean Dr. in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1997, Jennifer Lopez played a role as "Selena" which turned out to be a hit movie and a career boost for the young puerto-rican actress.
Selena was both a real person and a symbol, the poetic image of youth, beauty, wholesomeness, and family values, an inspiration to young people that they can be faithful to the old ways while embracing modern ideas. Her life ended in a tragedy that would forever be replayed by millions of minds, a senseless tale of betrayal by one who had loved her. Those circumstances are precisely why her image has become something greater and more influential than it ever could have been in life. The pilgrims were coming. The candle had been lit. As long as there were those who remembered, the flame would burn. Her spirit was alive. Through her, there was redemption for all. Eternally.
