This entry has been edited to remove the designation "openly gay". Openly gay is a description that is marginalizing. The phrase suggests someone is blatantly aggressive about their sexuality, or flamboyant about it or (in a more convoluted way of thinking) has nerve to come out of the closet. There is no corresponding term for heterosexuals ("openly straight"). No one is described as being blatantly heterosexual. Why does someone's decision about how freely to discuss their sexual orientation have to be turned into a definition of who they are. Let's drop the term "openly gay" and just use the designation gay.
