Tiedemann Giese (June 1, 1480 – October 23, 1550, Heilsberg) was a member of the patrician Giese family of Danzig (Gdańsk). The brother of the Hanseatic League merchant Georg Giese and relative of Albrecht Giese became Bishop of Chełmno (Culm) and Bishop of Warmia (Ermeland).
At age 24, Giese (and Mauritius Ferber) became a priest at the Catholic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, decades before Danzig and the church became Protestant when the Ordenstaat of the Teutonic Knights was transformed into the Duchy of Prussia in 1525. Giese was supported by Chancellor Lucas David.
Bishop Giese was a close friend of a fellow cleric who also lived in Warmia, Nicolaus Copernicus, who after his death in 1543 became famous as an astronomer and proponent of heliocentrism. Copernicus willed his writings to Giese and left his library to the church administration of Warmia.
