Maw (pronounced Mǒw) is a card game that consists of 2-8 players and is played with one deck of standard playing cards. Each person is dealt 5 cards with a starting card in the middle. At that point the dealer will declare the game of MAW in session, and then declare to which side of himself that play will begin.

There are several rules within the game of MAW, however, there are only three spoken rules. The three spoken rules are:

1. No bystanders; nobody can watch the game because they are required to play to learn the rules.

2. To talking; any unnecessary talking leads to a penalty card.

3. The game is like UNO; each person in turn matches a card in his hand with either the number or suit of the card on the table.

To temporarily pause the game, allowing the players to talk, a "Point of Order" may be called by the dealer to stop play. Once the issue outside the game(such as an approaching bystander) has been settled, the dealer may call "Un- point of Order" and play will resume. If the dealer calls a point of order for no specific reason, he may be handed a penalty card for a "Bad Point of Order"

There is a delay of game enforced, that, if player has not yet made a move to play a card with in 5 seconds of the last play, he will be penalized a card. It is the dealers job to keep count of the five seconds, for he is the only one who can give out penalties

If the dealer makes an unfair or incorrect penalty call, another player can give him a "bad call" penalty card.

The unspoken rules depend on the card being played, and if broken, will result in a penalty card. Also, breaking the spoken rules result in a penalty card. The game is over when a player has placed all his cards into the middle pile.

It is common that after a single person wins three consecutive games, he/she will make up a rule for the next game. The rules must not violate any of the other rules and does not carry over into other games. The rule is not spoken and the other players must figure out the rule. This is an optional version of play, and is not always used.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of MAW is introducing new players to the game. Because they only know of the three spoken rules, they must use common sense to figure out the unspeakable rules. This often leads to the new player to become extremely frustrated and/or pile up a unimaginably large amount of penalty cards.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the game, the unspeakable rules can not be written in this article. Therefore, the only way to learn the game is to play against another person who already knows how to play. After breaking the learners curve, MAW is an entertaining game suitable for all people.
