X PRIZEs are innovative, high-profile competitions that motivate individuals, companies and organizations across all boundaries to solve the grand challenges that are currently restricting humanity’s progress. The first X PRIZE was proposed by Dr. Peter Diamandis: the Ansari X PRIZE was a ten million dollar prize for a private spacecraft capable of reaching the edge of space.
The term X PRIZE may refer to any of the prizes:
- The Ansari X PRIZE, the original X PRIZE competition to create a private spaceflight vehicle
- The Archon X PRIZE, genomics competition to create a device to sequence 100 human genomes within 10 days or less
- The Automotive X PRIZE, engineering competition to create a fuel efficient clean car
- The Wirefly X PRIZE Cup, "live" air & space expo featuring space-related competitions and rocketry.
- The Google Lunar X PRIZE, a competition to put a robot on the moon
- The X PRIZE Foundation
