Llanishen electoral ward of Cardiff

Llanishen (Welsh Llanisien llan church + Isien Saint Isan) is a district of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It well-known locally as the home of the 'Tax Offices', the tallest buildings in north Cardiff and a landmark for miles around. The office complex overlooks the 'Fishguard estate', Parc Ty Glas industrial estate, old village, leafy suburban roads and varous parkland that constitute Llanishen. The district is also is home to a fully-featured Leisure Centre and the 60-acre Llanishen Reservoir - a local beauty spot that is connected to Cardiff's famous green belt, which bisects the city from the rising hills in the north to Cardiff Bay in the south.

History

The Glider Field (next to Llanishen Leisure Centre) was used for glider training during WW2. Oliver Cromwell had ties with Llanishen...

Industry

Llanishen Tax Office

Parc Ty Glas is now home to the offices of S4C (the national television station for Wales), and the National Eisteddfod of Wales, as well as a recent branch of Marks and Spencer Simply Food. Recently opened, near Marks and Spencer, is a Boots, Laura Ashley and Starbucks. Also on the site are government buildings, mostly occupied by the HM Revenue and Customs (mainly Revenue division — including an enquiry centre, or IREC).

Royal Ordnance Factory

Southwest Llanishen hosted a World War II Royal Ordnance Factory, ROF Cardiff, which in 1987 became an Atomic Weapons Establishment. It closed down and has recently been the site of a major housing development.

Leisure

Llanishen Sailing Centre

based at Llanishen Reservoir, Llanishen Sailing Centre is, along with Cardiff Bay, one of Wales' foremost Sailing Schools, and enjoys an international reputation..

Llanishen and Lisvane Reservoirs

The two non-functional reservoirs (the smaller Lisvane reservoir is adjoined to Llanishen Reservoir) have been used extensively for fly-fishing in prevous years, but are currently under threat from an American-lead commercial development for domestic housing. Fishing has been outlawed by the current owners, and a fence has been erected around Llanishen Reservoir (where the proposed houses would be built around a reduced lake). Locals are campaigning to make the area a registered village green..

Llanishen Leisure Centre

Llanishen Leisure Centre is situated in Llanishen. It has a pool, Squash courts, multi-activity Sports Hall, an improved Gym & Fitness suite, two Snooker Tables and Lounge Bar & Pool Side Cafeteria.

Llanishen Skate Park

In the large 'Glider Field' alongside the leisure centre, there is a public Skate Park.

Llanishen Rugby Club

The playing ground, and large training ground, is off Usk Road, and has been used in the past for training by visiting international teams. The Club House is off Ty Glas Avenue nearby.

Famous people from Llanishen

The film director Richard Marquand (Jagged Edge, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) was born in Llanishen. His father was Labour MP Hilary Marquand.
