Sofixit template breakage

Thanks for trying to improve the {{sofixit}} template. However, by adding an extra parameter you broke the template for many current inclusions that worked fine previously (including, I might add, my own). I've fixed the template now, but please be more cautious when editing widely used templates, and consider how a template is currently being used (That is, "don't break backwards compatibility" in coder speak). Also you might want to have a look at what changes I made so you can do the same in future. —Pengo 23:20, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

MK template

Just wanted to let you know that Template:Mortal Kombat character is one of the best looking and functioning templates I've seen on Misplaced Pages so far. EVula 15:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Image:BDR-101 01.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BDR-101 01.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Misplaced Pages articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell 17:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Please don't upload Image:BDR-101 01.jpg again. Thanks. Edward 14:03, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Having not been provided a valid reason for why this image shouldn't be on Misplaced Pages, you'll forgive me if I ignore your request. On a side note, you should know that there was no consensus to delete the image. Unless Misplaced Pages stopped working on consensus while I was away, it's deletion was in error. —Locke Coletc 04:56, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Blu-ray data layer ref

Well, I tried. I'm not sure what you found lacking about the reference I put in . At the bottom of page 2 it has a (low quality, I admit) diagram of showing the positions of data layers in HD DVD, Blu-ray, etc. The BD data layer resides 0.1mm under the surface, whereas DVD and HD DVD layers are at the center of the 1.2mm thick disc. Am I missing the point somehow? Spiel496 07:17, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I was looking for a reference for the statement that the reason the BDA opted to avoid using a caddy was because HD DVD didn't require one. —Locke Coletc 14:12, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Template magic

Of course these are simple examples for what I want to do, but the basic idea is there. There are templates that are called from about 130 pages some of which are lists of information about the other 125 pages. The data passed to the four templates is basically the same (well 3 of the templates use subsets of the data used in the 4th template). It would be nice to have one place to edit all this data. I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction for documentation (if you know of something that could help solve this problem. Thx in adv --Trödel 22:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

FYI, User talk:Ligulem was able to provide me with a potential solution --Trödel 17:18, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Glad you got it sorted out. =) Sorry for the slow response. —Locke Coletc 18:46, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

re: Newscast Schedule and Personalities Removal from Station Articles

True this isn't a TV listing or a station website, but duly noted newscast schedules and personalities listings should be listed in television station articles and there are other people who visit this site, who think that showing newscast information and a list of station personalities gives people a sense of what the station is.Locke Coletc 15:53, 26 January 2007 (UTC) Was not logged in as Locke Cole; see 156.110.24.142 (talk · contribs)

No, there's a consensus against such information. Please see Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Television Stations for more. Even more importantly, WP:NOT is explicit about this. 1.7.3: Misplaced Pages is not a TV guide: "For example, an article on a radio station generally should not list upcoming events, current promotions, phone numbers, schedules, programme lists, etc., although mention of major events or promotions may be acceptable." Seriously, if someone wants the programming schedule they can go to the provided URL. --Fang Aili 00:00, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Saturday Night Slam Masters (title screen).png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Saturday Night Slam Masters (title screen).png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Jim Nobles

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Jim Nobles, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Misplaced Pages is not" and Misplaced Pages's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Non-free use disputed for Image:Mspacman.png

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mspacman.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Misplaced Pages:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Misplaced Pages policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigrTex 17:31, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Map image of Pacific, Washington

A question/request -- the article for Pacific, Washington has a map you created that shows the location of Pacific in Pierce County, Washington. But most of Pacific, including city hall, police, fire department, the city park, the school, the library, and all its residential zoning, is within King County.

Since you created the existing map image, I figured I'd ask you whether you'd consider creating a map that shows Pacific's location within King County, or, if it's doable, creating a map that includes both counties' details, with Pacific straddling the county line. If a county-straddling map wouldn't be a hassle to create, Auburn, Washington could use one, too. Jmputnam 16:20, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Blu-ray_Disc.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Blu-ray_Disc.svg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Misplaced Pages articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Misplaced Pages:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Misplaced Pages policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

HD DVD 33GB "claim"

Counter to your assertions the source I cited actually does cite many references itself, take a look: http://www.emedialive.com/articles/readarticle.aspx?articleid=11639 I would say its the best technical FAQ out there for both HD DVD and Blu-ray. --Ray andrew 03:07, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I've responded at Talk:HD DVD, but suffice it to say, I don't agree with these changes in light of the fact that generally every other source out there (including major proponents of this disc format) all refer to the capacities as 15/30 GB. —Locke Coletc 03:42, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Removal of release count from BD page

It was removed because it had not been updated in 20 days (US numbers at least) take a closer look at the diff, re-add it if you feel like keeping it up to date, I don't see the point in having two conflicting totals that are in different states of update though (compare with the count on the comparison page). --Ray andrew 02:17, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

True it would likely be more productive to update them but I thought it would be more helpful long term (to me at least) of some other people got the message that they need to be updated or it needs to go. Sorry to cause a scene, but I hate people that put time sensitive information in the introduction of an article and then don't keep up with updating it, it makes Misplaced Pages look bad. --Ray andrew 02:44, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:DTS-HD-MA.svg

Our policy on the use of fair use images is clear. Per Misplaced Pages:Non-free content criteria item #10(c), a fair use rationale must be provided for each use of a copyrighted, fair use image. Five times over the last 10 days you have removed the disputed fair use rationale tag from this image without providing even a rudimentary fair use rationale. For guidance on how to write an appropriate fair use rationale, see Misplaced Pages:Non-free use rationale guideline. If, despite this advice and information, you insist on removing the disputed fair use rationale tag without providing a rationale for the sixth time, it will be treated as willful, blatant vandalism and you may be blocked from editing. Good day, --Durin 18:10, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

I've been here long enough to know that policies on Misplaced Pages change fairly frequently. I also don't take kindly to threats. I've started a discussion on this at User talk:BetacommandBot (actually started it before you re-tagged the image and posted a talk message here; which leads me to believe you saw that message and decided to try and threaten me instead of talk to me; though I'm trying really hard here to WP:AGF). Please contribute there, as I think there's a better solution to just CSD'ing images despite the obviousness of their fair use rationale. —Locke Coletc 19:26, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it's obvious what the fair use rationale would be - perhaps you could write one and include it in the template - that might be the easiest way to solve this dispute? -- Tawker 19:36, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Locke, it doesn't matter if you feel that the fair use rationale is obvious. It has to - it HAS TO - be made explicit. Bots tag such images, and rightly so: the WMF needs to protect itself. If you have a whole class of images all of which have the same obvious-but-unstated rationale, why not make a template? DS 19:58, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
  • In addition to myself and the bot, you've now been informed by four administrators that you are in error in removing the disputed fair use rationale tags from the images. You've repeatedly removed these tags from this and other images. This is not acceptable. The policy is clear, unequivocal and supported by Foundation resolution. I am not interested in threatening you. However, continuing to dispute this policy and attempt to edit war in violation of this policy has but one outcome. You will be blocked if this continues. --Durin 20:30, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
