'''Religious restrictions on the consumption of pork''' exist in both the ] and ], making it a ].
==Restriction== | |||
Both Orthodox ] (]) and ] ] dietary laws forbid pork, making it a ]. Among Christians, ] consider pork taboo, along with other foods forbidden by Jewish law. Many ] and ] groups also discourage pork consumption, although, with the exception of the ] and the ], the proscription is rarely enforced.
==Possible reasons for prohibition==
There are several explanations for this.
According to Jewish law, pork is but one of the many foods forbidden from consumption. In the strictest sense, it is as forbidden as are horses and shrimp. There are gravest interdictions, like eating milk and meat together. However, pork has become the symbol for everything un-kosher, which calls for explanation.
The general guidelines given in ] are that a "walking" animal is ] only if it both chews its cud and has cloven hooves. However, the pig is the only animal to have cloven hooves but doesn't chew its cud: its external aspect makes it appear kosher, while it is not, making it a symbol of hypocrisy.
During the persecutions of ], the Greeks forced the Jews to slaughter pigs in the ], which did not improve its image.
Moreover, the Roman legion ], that undertook to destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 68, had a boar for an emblem, sealing its fate as a symbol of everything contrary to Judaism.
], the Jewish court physician to Muslim sultan ] in the twelfth century, and arguably the greatest of Jewish philosophers and legal codifiers, agreed with other Muslims and Jews of his day by declaring that pork was an "unclean" meat because of pigs' dirty habits; when pigs cannot find water, which is often the case in the ], they have to bathe in mud or their own ]. Maimonides therefore asserted that pork was an unhealthy and unwholesome meat to consume. However, the irony of the argument is that it was quite unknown at the time what exactly caused illnesses. It was not until the mid 1800s that germs were identified as to be the main causative agent for diseases.
Nonetheless, Maimonides was supposedly the first to justify the taboo on secular rather than religious reasons.
Medical evidence supporting this early notion did not become available until ], when a clinical study found a connection between undercooked pork and ]. This caused a period of unrest for some ], as some began to argue that pork was safe to eat so long as it was fully cooked. Orthodox Jews, however, were appalled at this and insisted that there was some other ] meaning behind ] law. A third view is that the restriction is arbitrary, a way to test the faith.
The ] anthropologist ] thinks that the main reason was ecological-economical. Pigs require water and shade woods with seeds, but those conditions are scarce in Israel and Arabia. They cannot forage grass like ]s. Instead, they compete with humans for expensive grain. Unlike many other forms of ], pigs are ] ], eating virtually anything they come across, including ] and refuse. This was deemed unclean.
Hence a ]ern society keeping large stocks of pigs would destroy their ecosystem. Harris points out how, while the Hebrews are also forbidden to eat ]s and fish without scales, ] ]s couldn't afford to starve in the desert while having camels around.
He also points to ] where a partition is established: Christians keep pigs and live in the oak woods, while Muslims keep ]s and live in places that the foraging habits of goats keep unforested.
Some food psychologists point out the similarity between the Mosaic food laws as laid out in ] and the natural 'disgust' reaction that all people generally show to unfamiliar meats (see the work of ]). That suggests that the food taboos were a codification of existing practice rather than the imposition of a new rule, an attempt to give a religious explanation for an existing state of affairs in which the early Israelites did not eat pork etc. while other groups they knew did.
==Archaeological significance==
The relevance of the pork taboo for archaeologists is that the teeth of cooked pigs are highly resistant to biodegradation. This facilitates the pinpointing of the moment at which Islam took hold, for example, at points along the Indonesian archipelago. Plentiful pig's teeth are found in digs of pre-Islamic settlements. Pigs' teeth disappear from the traces as soon as Islam is adopted.{{Fact|date=February 2007}} See ] for an example.
==Pork prohibited in the Old Testament==
;Leviticus 11,7-8:And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you (KJV.)
;Deuteronomy 14,8:And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass (KJV.)
A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.
==Qur'anic injunctions against pig consumption==
One example of verses from the ] on pig consumption:
'''Qur'an 16:115.''' | |||
:He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
'''Qur'an 2:173.''' | |||
:He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the '''flesh of swine''', and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.
] consider the eating of pork to be forbidden, with a limited exception to avoid starvation. The Islamic taboo tends to come under scrutiny in places where it is not common, especially when it interferes with those who are unaware or do not follow it. In many cases, the prohibition is extended from consumption to the handling of pork products, creating issues in grocery, shipping, and restaurant environments.
==Side effects of pork consumption==
Uncooked or untreated, the meat may harbour worms and latent diseases. Many of these infestations are harbored in other animals as well, such as ] in ]s and ] in ]. The claim of the harmful ] in pigs, is now largely debunked by medical science as a myth.
] (flu) is one of the most famous illnesses which pigs do share with humans. However, the origin of the illness is found in a number of animals besides pigs. It is harbored in the lungs of the animal during the summer months and can affect both the animal and humans.
Consuming excessive amounts of pork may lead to ] and ]; due to its high ] and ] content. However, this goes for all sorts of animal flesh, and pork is in fact quite lean - leaner than most other domesticated animals - as long as its protective layer of fat is removed.
The pig is the carrier of various ], like ], ], ], etc. One of the most dangerous and common is ], a type of ]. Tapeworms may transplant to human intestines as well by consuming untreated or uncooked meat from pigs or other animals. Many of these parasites, including the notorious ] worms that causes ], are specific to the pig, or found in greater frequency in pigs, although most of them are also common in other livestock animals.
Before it was manufactured synthetically, people with insulin-dependent ] would usually use ] extracted from pigs.
