Visual Radio is a Nokia proprietary streaming technology for Symbian smartphones. It is not audio streaming: some phones that are already equiped with analog FM radio (notably the Nokia 3230) come with the Visual Radio client that is used to stream SMIL-based data to the phone while the user listens to analog FM radio. The SMIL content is produced by the radio station, and it creates several opportunities for interactivity in radio programming: quizzes, messaging, content download, commerce, etc.
The platform is composed of three parts:
- A content management system that should be integrated with the radio station's own legacy CMS, so the SMIL stream created by the radio station's content producers is synchronized with the audio programming.
- A streaming server that streams the SMIL content over the internet;
- A Symbian-based client that displays the stream and takes care of user interaction.
The Visual Radio platform in operated in a partnership between Nokia and HP.
