The '''Met''' (short for the '''Metall,''' '''Metool,''' and '''Mettaur''' variants of the name) is the flagship enemy of the '']'' ] series. They are also commonly referred to as "hard hats".{{Fact|date=September 2007}}

==Overview==
Appearing in nearly every game, the average Met is a tiny construction ] wearing a disproportionately-sized ] with a "plus" sign marked on it. Mets usually wait below their helmet, as it is ] to nearly all of ]'s weapons, and then stand when he gets too close, shooting at him. The Met typically fires three simultaneous shots in three directions; however, this has changed over time. This is normally the only time they may be damaged. Usually a single shot is enough to destroy a Met, though there are exceptions. The name of the Met/Metool is apparently formed from the "-met" of "]", due to the fact it is wearing one, or is a play with the words "]" and "]".

Mets were introduced in the very first '']'' video game, sitting still and peeping out of their helmets occasionally in ]'s stage. In later games they became common enemies in any stages, and started walking around as well.

In more recent ''Mega Man'' games (in particular, '']'' and the '']'' series), Mets either complement their mouth-fired projectiles or replace them entirely with a ]. When struck to the ground, the pickaxe releases a shockwave of varying damage and/or status effects depending on the breed of Met that releases it. In '']'', Mega Man can destroy Met's whenever they are under their shields with a fully charged shot in his Rush Power Adapter. In '']'', X, Zero, and Axl have found a way to penetrate the Mets' defenses without getting close to them.

It wasn't until the U.S. version of ''Mega Man Battle Network'' and ''Mega Man Anniversary Collection'' that "Mettaur" became the universal term for these robots in America. Mettaur is a mistranslation from メットール ''mettōru'' which is the Japanese spelling of Metool.{{Fact|date=September 2007}}

*Currently the ''Mega Man Legends'' series is the only series that does not have any mettaurs/metools/mets in it, although the ''Shekuten'' Reaverbots come close in terms of behavior: their left hand is replaced by a shield they hide behind, and can only be damaged when they turn the shield aside to attack.

==''Mega Man'' (classic series)==
]'s army in each game generally includes many Metools, and many of their variants. The original '''Metool'''s merely stayed still under their helmets, occasionally lifting them to shoot, but the '''Neo Metool''' which first appeared in '']'' and on which nearly all other Metools were based, could walk around as well. The various forms of Metool range from aerial ('''Heli Metool''') or aquatic ('''Metool Swim''') to wearing cacti ('''Cactuspy''') or rifles ('''Metool Sniper'''). There is also a variant named '''Metool Mommy''' that can spawn tiny '''Baby Metools'''.

'''Picket Man''' has the head of a Metool, but also possesses a torso, limbs, and a shield. Instead of firing shots at Mega Man, it throws pickaxes. There are variants of the design that drive construction equipment. Similar robots named '''Dig Labors''' appear within the '']'' series.

The '''Metool Potton''' appears in '']''. While not itself a Met, this machine endlessly produces a variant of Mets that can hop short distances.
===Metool bosses===
In addition to the smaller types of Mets, larger varieties exist which serve as bosses or sub-bosses in various locations.
====Giant Met====
In the Doc Robot version of the Needle Man stage in '']'', there are two Giant Mets that Mega Man must destroy. These fire three large shots at a wide arc, and when they are close to the ground, they spit out Mets that charge at the player. Unlike the Metool Daddy found later in '']'', the cross portion of the helmet is this Giant Met's weak point.

====Metool Daddy====
The boss of the 1st stage of Wily's fortress in '']''. Like other Mets, it can only be hit with its hat up. When its hat is up, it tries to jump and squash Mega Man, leaving an earthquake and when Mega Man touches ground, he's immobilized. Four smaller Mets drop down and escape the screen. The cycle continues until he gets defeated. Unlike the Giant Met, this Met's weak point is his body when the helmet is raised.

====Giant Metool Cannon====
Though not named in '']'', these are essentially giant versions of the Metool Cannons from ''Mega Man 5'', though with extended, almost sniper rifle-like barrels. They serve as sub-bosses towards the end of the game.

====Mettonger Z====
A large robot tank operated by a single Met. The entire tank is invounerable to attack, though the Met in its cockpit can be damaged. It serves as a boss in Mr. X's Castle in ''Mega Man 6''. Named after ].

==''Mega Man X'' series==
The ], set a century after the classic series, also features Mets, though their frequency has been far decreased in comparison. Most of these variants of Mets behave similar to those of the classic series.

*'''Metool C-15''' appears in '']'', '']'', and '']''. It is the most common variant, and behaves as Metool FX's with the exception that it will attempt to attack the character when he turns around.
*'''Planty''' appears in '']''. According to the sourcebooks, it was programmed to cultivate forests by deploying Iworms, a type of soil-enriching mehaniloid. Instead of a helmet, it wears a bush which it uses to camouflage itself.
*'''Metool D-2''' appears in '']''. It is essentially a Metool SV wearing a ] helmet with a radio attached. The '''Metool T''' is a recolored variant of this unit.
*The '''Met Army''' units appear in '']'' through '']'' and '']''. They include the '''Metool Soldier''', '''Metool Commander''', and '''Metool GM''' variants, and though they are designed differently, they behave like normal Mets.
*'''Scrap Met''' appears in '']''. It is composed of scrap parts, and instead of shooting it will create a "force field" made of the scraps, as well as throwing them at its opponent.
*'''Cone Met''' appears in '']''. It acts as a traffic cone in one of the levels, and will hop around and try to disturb its opponent as he drives through the level.
*'''Dark Met''' appears in '']''. It has glowing red eyes and black armor, and has the ability to function in near total darkness.
*'''Met Counter''' appears in '']''. It has the ability to deflect most of an enemy's attack back at it itself. It is a pink and white recolor of a normal Met.
*'''Met Nurse''' appears in '']''. It has the ability to heal its allies in battle, but lacks offensive capability. As such, it will surrender and relinquish a weapon usable by Cinnamon if all of its allies are destroyed.
*'''Gold Met''' and '''Silver Met''' appear in '']''. They attack like normal Mets, but are prone to fleeing the battle. If destroyed correctly, they relinquish rare weapons, force metals, and a good deal of money. Gold Mets are also spawned by the '''Gold Blader''' mechaniloid during battle.
*'''Met Giant''' appears in '']''. It is a giant Met that hides under its helmet and generally runs away if encountered. It drops very rare weapons and force metals, but will viciously attack the party if they attempt to steal from it. Due to its relatively great strength, it usually kills them quickly.

===Gartunka Robot===
The '''Gartunka Robot''' appears within Morph Moth's stage in '']''. It is not actually a Met, but is composed of scrap parts of ''X1'' enemies, including Metools.
<!--Trivia, should be at bottom of page, or integrated into some kind of "reception" dealy

*There is Met Hat in the webcomic ]. Metool D-2 appears in the Mega Man 5 story arc as a parody of R2-D2 who assists Mega Man and Bass as they attack Bob's fortress. According to the comic, he quickly becomes a fan favorite and therefore has Star Power (a parody of Star Man's shield weapon). He also makes a cameo in the final fight against Bob.-->

==Other series==
===''Mega Man Zero'' series===
In the first three games in the '']'' series, the player can use a certain ] to turn enemies into Mets, while their appearance in '']'' serves as a normal enemy instead of a special Cyber Elf event. These enemies are simply called "Mettaurs" with no suffix code. If Zero kills a Met with the Z-Knuckle weapon, he can use the Met's hat as a shield (simply called "Met Shield").
*A strange thing to note about these Mets is that they're exactly the same as Metool FX units from ''Mega Man 7''. Not only do they behave in the same manner, but they even reuse the ] from ''Mega Man 7''.

===''Mega Man Battle Network'' series===
In the '']'' series, Mets appear as weak ]es in most installments of the series. There are also stronger ]s of Mets in various colors.

===''Mega Man ZX'' series===
In '']'' series, there are 2 Met varieties. Patrolaur (A pun on Patroll and Mettaur) hides under a hat, and attacks if you are in a biometal form. Otherwise, they're kinda cute. Remettaurs are similar to Metool Mommies. They will attack regardless of your form.

====Powmettaur====
The Powmettaur is a giant ] Met found in area H of '']'', the first game in the series. It jumps around, spawns mini-mets, and creates balloons that turn into enemies. On normal mode, it is also revealed that, while tucked into it's hat, the Met can hover a short distance off the ground for a brief period of time.

==='']''===
"Mettena" are found in the Megaman Starforce series, as an obvious throwback to Mettaur Viruses. The look almost identical to the viruses, except they have an antenna-like device on the top of their helmet. Unlike Mettaur Viruses, however, Mettenas only come in 3 forms, however they share the same color scheme as the normal 3 viruses. (Mettaur, Mettaur2, and Mettaur3.))
Note: there is new thing about Mets. The Metenna virus series also comes in a "G" variety (Such as "MetennaG"). These versions have twice the amount of Hp their predecessors have.
